Kelč can be explored on foot or by bicycle along two circular routes on the educational trail. The routes have different focuses: the short route passes through the town’s historic heritage zone, while the longer one follows significant landscape features in the area around Kelč. Both routes can be walked or cycled. When planning, you can choose between a shorter loop linked to the town’s history and a longer route taking in the landscape around the town.
Historic Heritage Zone and Square
The historic heritage zone encompasses the core of the New Town as well as the Renaissance château complex and its landscaped park. The square known as Náměstí is also part of the heritage zone. Two notable figures were born in houses on the square: František Pastrnek was a linguist and Slavist; Tomáš Fryčaj was a Moravian Enlightenment figure and writer. In Kelč, architectural history and the memory of people associated with language and literature come together.
The square is also a designated stop on the “Na Kelečský zámek z Valmezu” cycling tour. This tour passes through Kelč and is suitable for e-bikes, gravel bikes and mountain bikes. If you are planning the route, you can include the designated sightseeing stop at the square as a separate part of your outing. The tour and the educational trail offer different ways to explore Kelč by bicycle: one is a described cycling tour through the town, while the other comprises two circular routes.
Church and Museum
The Church of St Catherine (sv. Kateřiny) has a documented medieval origin. It is used for religious services and concerts and has been a protected historic building since 10 February 1992.
The Kelč Museum is housed in the former old school building at Kelč 290. Its exhibitions include the permanent exhibition “Po stopách kelečského dýmkařství” on pipe making. The same building also has a room dedicated to the Křička siblings. Alongside the walking routes and the town’s buildings, the exhibitions give visitors a distinct cultural and historical focus.
Museum visits must be arranged exclusively by telephone at least one day in advance. Make sure to call in good time before your visit. This is especially important if you would like to combine the museum visit with a walking route or a stop at the square: the appointment must be arranged in advance, so you cannot simply count on visiting spontaneously.
Château, Bridge and Cycling Tour
Kelč Fortress was converted into a Renaissance château in the 1580s. The château itself is currently not open to the public. If visiting the château is important to your plans, check its access status again before your trip; its inclusion in the historic heritage zone does not change the fact that access is restricted.
Another striking structure is the original stone bridge dating from 1912. It is decorated with four pylons and hemispheres and is one of the few surviving concrete bridges in the region. Its construction date and design add a distinctive architectural feature to the impressions of the historic heritage zone.
A stay in Kelč can bring together a range of interests: the short route through the heritage zone, the museum by prior telephone arrangement, the church and the cycling tour with its designated stop at the square. If you are mainly interested in the landscape features in the surrounding area, consider taking the longer route. Because the château is currently not open to the public, it cannot be included in a public visitor itinerary.
