The 69-kilometre Velký-Litenčický Circuit connects Vyškov with Morkovice-Slížany. Together with the Morkovice–Nezamyslice cycle path, it gives the town a clear connection to cycling. There is also a basket-making museum dedicated to a distinct craft, and a history of churches and the castle that can be read in specific architectural details. When choosing your destination, you can therefore focus on different themes, from cycling to basketry and architectural history.

Cycling Routes and Getting There

The Velký-Litenčický Circuit is 69 kilometres long and connects Vyškov with Morkovice-Slížany. This gives you a specific total distance to consider when planning. If you include the route in your trip, you can take it into account as a cycling option connecting the two towns.

The Morkovice–Nezamyslice cycle path is suitable for bicycles, inline skates, longboards, scooters, strollers and baby carriers. When planning, the intended mode of transport matters as well as the destination. There is a bus stop near the cycle path, with regular services from Kroměříž, Vyškov and Brno. If you plan to travel by bus, check the current timetables before setting off.

Basket Making as a Distinct Cultural Theme

The Morkovice Basket-Making Museum focuses exclusively on basketry and related fields. Visitors can see the many things that can be made from willow rods. The museum reopened in Morkovice-Slížany on 12 June 2010 and is housed in one of the oldest and best-preserved buildings in the town.

For travellers interested in crafts, the museum is a clearly defined point of interest. Two aspects come together here: its special focus on basketry and the historic building that houses it. This complements the architectural history of the churches and castle with a distinct perspective on local craft traditions.

Churches and Local History

The protected heritage site of the Church of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist includes not only the church but also the cemetery, the enclosing wall with its gate and wicket, and the staircase. It is therefore an ensemble made up of several architectural and spatial elements.

The church has a simple, rectangular, unarticulated floor plan and a gabled roof with a lantern-like sanctus bell tower. The clear basic form and distinctive roof structure offer two specific details for architecture enthusiasts to look out for. The parish church of Saint John the Baptist stands on a former cemetery. According to the oldest written records, it is believed to have existed before 1389.

A reference dating from 1437 mentions a fortress with a farmyard in Morkovice, the town with the Church of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist, as well as ponds and forests. It adds an early historical snapshot of the town to its architectural and ecclesiastical history.

Castle and Outdoor Swimming Pool

Parts of the Gothic structure have been preserved at Morkovice Castle, including cellar areas and the perimeter walls of the ground floor in the north and east wings. The castle is not open to the public; check access again before planning a visit.

Morkovice-Slížany also has a municipal outdoor swimming pool with a 50-metre pool, which is also open to visitors. Check whether the pool is currently open before travelling. Together with the cycling routes, basket-making museum and historic buildings, it offers a range of different themes to consider when planning your trip.
