Ujčov combines waterfalls, wooded river valleys, religious buildings and practical opportunities for a walk or bike ride. There is also a local cider product. This brings landscape, cultural history, physical activity and regional produce together as different ways of experiencing the place.

Landscape and Nature

The Ujčov Waterfalls lie west of Ujčov. They form a cascade system whose two main tiers are nine metres high in total. In the Ujčov area, the Svratka winds through deep, wooded valleys. South of Ujčov, a population of protected ostrich fern grows on the riverbank.

The Babylon lookout point near Kovářová is 626 metres above sea level and offers views of the surrounding area. Three large-leaved linden trees stand in the centre of Ujčov, near the war memorial. The natural features differ in scale: the waterfalls are defined by the combined height of their main tiers, Babylon by its elevation and views, and the Svratka by its wooded valleys. The fern adds a botanical accent.

Buildings and Remembrance

The Chapel of St Francis of Assisi in Ujčov has a multi-storey rectangular tower with a curved roof and a covered, functioning wooden bell frame. It was restored and consecrated in 1993 by the Bishop of Brno, V. Cikrle. The chapel is probably a vernacular building on the site of an older bell tower.

The Church of St Wenceslas, a state-protected cultural monument, is located in the district of Dolní Čepí. A monument erected in 1975 between Horní Čepí and Dolní Čepí commemorates partisan units from the Second World War. The historical details place emphasis on different aspects: for the chapel, the focus is on the probable interpretation of its origins and the date of its restoration; the church is identified by its protected status, and the monument by its date and commemorative purpose.

On Foot or by Bike

An easy 7.6-kilometre walk leads from Štěpánov nad Svratkou to Nedvědice and passes through Ujčov. Most of the route to the church in Nedvědice follows red trail markers; the final stretch to the railway station follows yellow markers. As route conditions can change and trail markers should be checked on site, check the signs before setting out.

Marked cycle route 4025, from Polička to Nedvědice, also passes through Ujčov. For the walk, the specific distance of 7.6 kilometres is useful; for the bike ride, route 4025 and its endpoints, Polička and Nedvědice, provide guidance. This gives you different ways to plan: a walking route with a stated distance and a change of trail markers, or a cycle route identified by its number and endpoints.

Cider from Ujčov

A cider press in the Kasany district of Ujčov processes fruit from the neighbouring orchards. You can buy Ujčov cider directly from the farm, at farmers’ markets and in selected shops; availability may vary. If you want to include the cider in your travel plans, check availability in advance.
