Jimramov combines a distinctive setting in the landscape with several layers of its architectural and local history. The town lies at the confluence of the Fryšávka and Svratka rivers in the Hornosvratecká vrchovina, on the eastern edge of the Žďárské vrchy Protected Landscape Area. Visitors looking for a cultural focus during their stay will find several perspectives rather than a single defining era: the conservation area, church and castle reveal different phases of construction, while the park and exhibition add insights into local history and regional culture. Jimramov can thus be explored through its squares, buildings and cultural themes.

Historic town centre: eleven stops along the streetscape

The historic town centre is an urban conservation area designated in 1990. A walking tour includes eleven stops marked on the building façades. The conservation area is centred on a long, narrow, funnel-shaped square, mostly lined with houses featuring 19th-century historicist façades. As you walk around, you can match the markers to individual façades while taking in the shape of the square. This draws attention not only to individual buildings, but also to how they frame the central square as a whole.

Church and castle: compare the building phases

Two distinct building phases can be identified at the Protestant church. The nave was built between 1784 and 1786 and features early Neoclassical elements; the Empire-style tower was added between 1883 and 1884. These dates make clear that the nave and tower were not built at the same time. Alongside its architecture, the church’s high-quality organ is part of its cultural profile: it is used for services and concerts. The building can therefore be understood both through its development and its musical use. If you are planning your trip around a service or concert, check the specific dates in advance.

Jimramov Castle also brings together more than one era: the Renaissance building was remodelled in the Neoclassical style in the 18th century. In 1746, Marie Antonie z Waldorfu had the castle’s north wing and a covered passage to the oratory of the Catholic church built. Comparing the castle’s Renaissance origins and Neoclassical alterations with the dated building phases of the Protestant church reveals their different histories.

Bludník Park and the Otevřeno Festival

Bludník Park was an English-style castle park dating from around 1800. Trees from the original arboretum have survived and are also part of its history. The park is also a venue for events: the Otevřeno Festival has been held here since 1990. If you would like to plan your stay around the festival, check the specific event dates and programme in advance.

Exhibition themes at Síň rodáků

Síň rodáků (Síň Rodáků jimramovska) complements the architectural history with literature, regional life and biographies. Exhibition themes include the life and work of Jan Karafiát; life in Vysočina, featuring a nativity scene by local carver Pivoňka; and people born in Jimramov. The exhibits may change. The range of themes—from an author and regional life to people born in Jimramov—offers a different cultural perspective from looking at façades and building phases. If one of these themes is particularly important to you, check the current exhibition content before your visit.
