For a cultural trip to Saar, history offers several distinct ways to explore: you can encounter it in a star-shaped church, in exhibitions and at other Baroque buildings. You can also include routes around Zelená Hora in your plans. These stops offer a range of options to choose from—architecture on site, historical stories, an exhibition or a route through the landscape.

Architecture and routes around Zelená Hora

The Pilgrimage Church of St John of Nepomuk on Zelená Hora is a star-shaped building dating from the early 18th century. Jan Blazej Santini designed it in a distinctive style combining Gothic Revival and Baroque elements. The main visitor route leads from the main gate through the pilgrimage grounds and into the church. Check the access conditions before you travel.

The educational trail around Zelená Hora also offers a different way to experience the area: Route B runs along wooden walkways through the Louky u Černého lesa nature monument to the pilgrimage church. The educational trail's circular routes are described as accessible and suitable for outings with strollers and small children. This information applies to the circular routes; check local trail conditions before your visit.

Monastic history on tours and in exhibitions

A tour of Zámek Žďár explores the site of the former 13th-century Cistercian monastery through stories and architecture. The New Generation Museum offers another perspective: its multimedia exhibition presents the 800-year history of the château and its surroundings through plays of light and shadow, music and animated stories. It's worth checking the museum's current information before your visit.

At Moučkův dům, a permanent exhibition takes you through the history of Žďár nad Sázavou. It begins in 1252 with the founding of the monastery and continues through the turbulent developments of the 20th century. Moučkův dům is open year-round except Mondays; check seasonal arrangements before your visit.

The Regional Museum is also housed in a historic building: Tvrz čp. 276, one of the oldest buildings in Žďár nad Sázavou. The building dates from the 14th or 15th century. Here, the city's history is not only an exhibition topic but is also reflected in a building whose origins go back many centuries.

Baroque buildings and their details

Dolní hřbitov is an architectural monument of Baroque architecture from the early 18th century, built to a design by Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel. Eight statues of saints on the Baroque bridge in Žďár nad Sázavou tell another story with precise dates: chronograms assign seven of the statues to 1761 and the statue of St Methodius to 1766. The dates therefore differ only for this one figure.

Modelové Království Žďár offers a subject of its own. It focuses on the construction and operation of one of the largest model railway layouts in the Czech Republic. It depicts real railway stations, buildings and landscape features. Railway enthusiasts will find a different perspective on stations and landscapes here than when exploring historic buildings.
