A medieval fortress forms the oldest core of the hunting lodge in Kněževes. It has been preserved in Late Gothic form; remnants of the original interior plaster decoration have also survived. The hall features an exceptionally well-preserved wooden beam ceiling with rich moulding and carvings. The building thus reveals different layers of its architectural history: the fortress form preserved from the Late Gothic period and the richly detailed ceiling. Those interested in architecture can view these features as two distinct aspects: the oldest structural core and the hall’s decorative features.

Local History and Regional Perspective

The history of the village can also be placed in its historical context. Kněževes is documented in writing from 1370 and belonged to the Mostiště estate in the 14th century. These details serve different purposes: 1370 marks the first written record, while the estate affiliation identifies the historical context of the time. A more recent institutional perspective is provided by the Regionální muzeum Horního Pooslaví in Kněževes nad Oslavou. It was founded on 1 January 2013 as a collecting, research and exhibition museum. The museum presents the history and natural heritage of the Upper Oslava area, especially Radostínsko, Měřínsko and Křižanovsko. Its thematic scope therefore ranges from the history of the village to a regional perspective on history and nature. The museum’s founding provides a much more recent point of reference than the medieval details about Kněževes.

Wayside Shrines and Chapel

Wayside shrines are cultural landmarks that shape the landscape of Kněževes. There is also an 18th-century chapel with a small bell tower; its altarpiece depicts Saint Florian. These features make different impressions: the wayside shrines contribute to the landscape, while the chapel features a specific, named saint. Together with the hunting lodge, they offer a cultural perspective that is not limited to a single building.

Walking Trail or Cycle Route

The Hřibový háj trail starts in the village square in Kněževes. There are numerous wooden mushroom sculptures there, which accompany the route. The trail is 3 km long, takes about an hour and is suitable for preschool-age children. It includes the Na Kříbu viewpoint on the roof of a former water tower. From there, you can see Kněževes and Bohdalovsko Nature Park. The mushroom sculptures are a defining feature of the village square; at Na Kříbu, the view of the village and nature park takes centre stage.

The signposted Mlynářská cycle route is on a different scale: it runs between Nové Město na Moravě and Kněževes and is 38.5 km long. The two routes differ clearly in format: Hřibový háj is a walking trail of a set duration that is also suitable for preschool-age children, while Mlynářská is a considerably longer cycling route. This lets you choose between the tours based on the kind of outing you want, rather than treating them as similar alternatives.
