Blažkov brings together local history and practical cycling connections. Its historical landmarks range from the town’s first mention to places of remembrance and archaeological traces; the cycling routes connect Blažkov with Šiklův mlýn and Zvole.
Local History and Places of Remembrance
Blažkov was first mentioned in 1348. For almost the entire 15th and 16th centuries, the village belonged to the Pernštejn family. These two details mark different points in time: the early mention was followed by a long period under the ownership of this family.
A later, precisely dated landmark is the Evangelical Church of the Bohemian Brethren. It was ceremonially opened on 28 October 1926. There is also a monument to the fallen of the First World War on the village green. Blažkov’s protected wayside shrine stands on the site of a former burial ground; skeletons found during road construction attest to this connection.
The Chapel of Saints Cyril and Methodius is also among the local places of remembrance: a church service is held there every year on the feast day of Saints Cyril and Methodius. Check the exact date locally before your visit. This distinguishes a recurring religious occasion from historical landmarks that are permanently present.
Archaeological traces tell the story of two other places. According to oral tradition, a castle once stood on the headland Na Babici above the Bobrůvka. Archaeological investigations found remains of a settlement built from wood and clay there. Elsewhere, in a meadow by the river below the slope called “na Babinci”, lie the remains of the “Řecky” settlement. The different place names and archaeological contexts give these traces their own distinct connection to the surrounding area.
Tradition at the Pond
The Blažkovské závody přes rybník is a recurring tradition that began in 1947. During the event, daring cyclists ride across a narrow wooden footbridge just above the pond’s water. The programme also includes traditional performances by local amateur actors and exhibitions of historic cars and agricultural machinery. If you would like to include the event in your trip, check the dates in advance; the tradition itself does not indicate a specific day to visit.
Cycling Connections and Getting There
Cycle route 5130 connects Blažkov with Šiklův mlýn. Cycle route 5235 runs between Zvole and Blažkov. The two numbers therefore refer to different connections. Check the route numbers and surfaces again before setting out if you are planning your ride around them.
The Zubří-stezky circular route also passes through Blažkov. It is suitable for all types of bicycles, with trekking and mountain bikes particularly recommended. This gives you another cycling option in addition to the two numbered routes.
Blažkov is listed as a possible destination for travel by bus. Šiklův mlýn is 2.5 km from Blažkov. Cycle route 5130 and this distance are different types of planning information: one identifies a cycling connection, while the other gives the distance between the places. Check the bus connections and the stated distance before travelling. This will help you interpret the information in light of your planned journey.
