The 46-hectare Velký rybník is the largest pond in the Děčín District and creates a distinctive landscape feature in Rybniště. Regional cycling routes, an educational trail, seasonal waterside activities and notable historic buildings complement the natural setting. The town offers ways to plan a trip that brings together scenery, outdoor activity and local history.
Pond Landscape and Routes
Rybniště lies in the Lužické hory Protected Landscape Area. At 46 hectares, Velký rybník is the largest pond in the Děčín District. It is also a nature reserve with wetland shore areas and protected plants. An educational trail leads from the cemetery to the dam at Velký rybník.
In the town centre, large linden trees and other mature deciduous trees stand on the preserved dam of the former pond. A route for cyclists and pedestrians runs along this dam. Important regional cycling routes also pass through Rybniště and connect to cycling routes in the Bohemian Switzerland area. This gives visitors different ways to get outdoors, from regional connections to a route through the town centre.
Activities Throughout the Seasons
When there is enough snow, cross-country ski trails are groomed in winter. These include several local routes and, where conditions allow, the Krásná Lípa loops by Tůň or at Kamenná Horka. Which routes are maintained depends on snow conditions and local trail grooming.
Sport fishing at Školní rybník is available every year from April to November, with a fishing permit. The municipality publishes the fishing season annually; check the applicable permit rules before your trip. The two seasonal activities require different planning: cross-country skiing depends on snow and trail grooming, while fishing depends on the season and a fishing permit.
Activities can be booked at the multifunctional sports field in Rybniště; availability may vary. There is also an inline skating loop at Náves Rybnišťského panáčka, which is suitable for beginners. If you plan to use either facility, check the booking requirements or the current condition of the facility in advance.
Church, Chapel and Traditional Houses
The Church of St. Joseph is an Art Nouveau building by Antonín Möller of Varnsdorf, constructed between 1909 and 1911. It is considered the youngest church in the region. The surviving traditional wooden houses feature half-timbered construction in both single-storey and two-storey forms. These architectural styles add another dimension to the story of the town.
The Three Kings Chapel, dating from 1775, stands in the Na sedle district near the European watershed. The church, wooden houses and chapel each represent a different period and building style: from early 20th-century Art Nouveau and traditional timber construction to an 18th-century building.
The third Rybnišťský masopust took place on 8 February 2025. The municipality described it as a traditional celebration and expressed its wish to continue the tradition.
Getting There and Using Rybniště as a Starting Point
