At the foot of Plešivec, water flows over two rock ledges to form the Chřibské Waterfalls: two small natural waterfalls. Chřibská combines attractions such as these with marked hiking trails and a history reflected in its buildings, places and cultural events. This gives you a range of options when planning your trip—from a short circular walk to longer hikes and visits that depend on seasonal conditions.
Waterfalls, Basalt and Views
Chřibský vrch is a wooded basalt hill, 621 metres high, about two kilometres southeast of Chřibská. A viewpoint on a basalt rock offers a different perspective on the landscape: it is about three kilometres from the market square, in the direction of Doubice, and looks out over the Chřibská valley. The two locations can be distinguished by their setting and what they overlook: forest and the hill define Chřibský vrch, while the other viewpoint focuses on the view into the valley.
Hiking Trails with Different Destinations
The short circular route to the Chřibské Waterfalls is about three kilometres long. It starts and ends in Chřibská’s market square. A marked hiking trail leads from Chřibská through the forest to Malý Stožec, which offers a view of the reservoir.
At Chřibský vrch, marked hiking trails can take you past the Lesní divadlo on a shorter circular route. Experienced hikers can extend the route to Křížový vrch and on to Studenec. This gives you a choice of a short circular walk, a forest trail with a view of the reservoir, or a possible extension for experienced hikers.
Church, Museum and History
St. George’s Church underwent extensive reconstruction in the Renaissance style between 1596 and 1605. Its exterior walls feature Renaissance tombstones of prominent citizens of the town dating from the 17th century. The church is also the venue for the classical concerts of Chřibské kulturní léto.
The museum in Chřibská opened on 10 August 2002 in the renovated house No. 22. Tadeáš Haenke was born in this house on 6 December 1761. The Chřibská Tourist Information Centre is also located in building No. 22 on the market square; it offers tourist information, maps and brochures. Planning your visit around the season is important: the museum can be visited mainly during the peak season. Visits outside this period may be possible at other times by arrangement; check the visiting arrangements before your trip.
The history of glassmaking is also part of the town’s past. The glassworks in Horní Chřibská is first mentioned in 1414; it ceased operations in 2007. At Chřibský hrádek, archaeologists found the remains of a small rock castle dating from the 13th century. The site is on a steep rock above the valley of the Doubický potok, about two kilometres from Chřibská.
Music and Seasonal Visit Planning
Chřibské kulturní léto has been running for three decades. Every year, four classical music concerts are held in St. George’s Church from June to September. Check the dates of individual concerts before your trip. In summer, the Lesní divadlo also hosts concerts and performances by local interest groups. So if you want to plan your trip around music, the summer programme and its specific dates are important planning points.
The aqueduct near Dolní Chřibská is freely accessible year-round; before your visit, check for any temporary local restrictions. It is considered a remarkably well-preserved technical monument, with a history dating back to 1886. Dolní Chřibská also has wet meadows with rare plants, including the common spotted orchid (Dactylorhiza majalis). Marschnerova louka was designated a natural monument in 1995; Louka u Brodských was also designated a natural monument three years later. Dolní Chřibská, a district of the town of Chřibská, is part of the European site of importance České Švýcarsko.
