Nová Chribská combines a largely preserved village character with a highly varied landscape. Numerous buildings of North Bohemian folk architecture shape the village, including timber-framed houses with the characteristic feature known as the podstávka. At the same time, the built-up area gives way to tree-covered areas, as well as meadows and pastures. When choosing a stay based on cultural history and landscape, you can weigh these two specific features of the village together.
Building Culture and Local History
The podstávka is a specific feature that helps define the local building culture: it characterizes the timber-framed houses that belong to North Bohemian folk architecture. The fact that the village has largely retained its character and that numerous buildings belong to this architectural tradition makes it a feature of the village as a whole, rather than a story about just one building.
The village’s history also includes a large steam sawmill founded in 1890 and owned by Rudolf Zimmer. The sawmill represents a different strand of local history from the commemoration of those who fell in the First World War. Together, the two offer insight into different sides of the village’s history.
The memorial honours 21 citizens of Nová Chribská who fell on the battlefields of the First World War. It was restored in 2014, followed by the reconstruction of the associated park in 2015. The stone walls were renewed, hand-hewn stone posts were made and installed, garden furniture was purchased, and the park’s landscaping was completed. The memorial is about 200 m below the railway crossing; when travelling from Chřibská to Rybniště, it is on the left, opposite the bus stop.
A Landscape Shaped by Several Influences
The Nová Chribská Landscape Character Area forms a transition between the Krásnolipsko-Podluží and Kytlicko-Chřibsko Landscape Character Areas. Nová Chribská is also within the CHKO Lužické hory protected landscape area, where Protection Zone III predominates. The highly varied topography, watercourses and small bodies of water with surrounding vegetation shape the natural environment. The transition from built-up areas to tree-covered land, meadows and pastures is also part of its character.
The two designations answer different questions: the landscape character areas describe which landscape regions Nová Chribská lies between; CHKO Lužické hory and Protection Zone III indicate its protected-area classification. They therefore offer two complementary perspectives on the natural environment: its regional location and its protection classification.
Cycling Routes and Orientation
Road II/263 is the main transport route through Nová Chribská and a reference point for getting your bearings. For cyclists, regional cycle route CT 211 (Šluknovská) includes section 12 at Nová Chribská. Route surfaces and conditions can change; check current conditions before setting out.
Within the municipality of Rybniště, which includes Nová Chribská, important regional cycle routes run through the area and connect to cycle routes in Bohemian Switzerland and Saxon Switzerland. This municipality-wide context offers a broader perspective than the specific section named in the village. When planning, the cycle route section at Nová Chribská and the municipality’s wider cycle network are two distinct points of reference.
