Five bilingual educational trails lead through Jiříkov, connecting the town’s history with its present. They provide a guiding thread for your exploration, covering topics such as sacred architecture, Baroque sculptures, historic residential buildings and the pilgrimage history of Filipov. Hikes in the region and a 54-kilometre cycling loop that passes through Jiříkov offer a different way to explore. This lets you decide before your trip whether architectural and religious history or outdoor activities should shape your stay more.
Baroque Buildings and Historic Houses
The interior of St. George’s Church is furnished in the Baroque style. The church grounds also include a Baroque mortuary chapel dating from around 1729. It stands at the southeastern edge of the grounds, in the adjoining cemetery, and forms part of the perimeter wall. Its incorporation into the wall and its position at the edge of the grounds give the building a distinct place in the church complex, alongside its own architecture. The Baroque rectory was built in 1777 and has been a protected monument since 4 April 1966. Jiříkov is also home to a Baroque sculptural group dating from 1769, depicting Saint Charles Borromeo, Saint John of Nepomuk and Saint Florian.
Four houses built in the 18th century in the vernacular architectural style are among Jiříkov’s state-protected immovable monuments. One house was built in 1771; the site has been protected as a monument since 1966. A statue of Christ was placed in its garden in 1860. A complex consisting of a rural house and a shed, by contrast, dates from around the middle of the 19th century and is located by the Jiříkovský potok; it has been protected as a monument since 2015. The different building styles and dates show that Jiříkov’s architectural history is not limited to its sacred buildings.
Pilgrimage and Church Architecture in Filipov
Filipov, a district of Jiříkov, combines religious history with an annual event. The pilgrimage began after an apparition of the Virgin Mary on 13 January 1866 and the subsequent healing of Magdaléna; people then began making pilgrimages to the shrine. The annual pilgrimage Mass draws hundreds of worshippers from Czechia, Germany and Slovakia in the early morning hours of January. Its origins and recurring date offer different points of interest: you can learn about how the pilgrimage began or time your trip to coincide with the Mass. If you are travelling specifically for the event, check the dates for that year’s programme in advance.
The basilica in Filipov adds another period to the history of sacred architecture. It was built between 1873 and 1885 as a monumental, single-nave Neo-Romanesque church with two towers on the façade. This presents a contrast with the Baroque-furnished St. George’s Church: on one side, a Baroque interior; on the other, a single-nave Neo-Romanesque church with two façade towers.
Hiking and Cycling
Jiříkov is one of the municipalities on the borders of the Labské pískovce Protected Landscape Area and the Bohemian Switzerland National Park; the region is well suited to hiking. For cycling, the 54-kilometre Tour de Zeleň route passes through Jiříkov. It can also be ridden outside the annual race on a road bike, gravel bike or e-bike. The cycling loop thus offers a named route option, while the hiking trails make the most of the region’s location. Check route conditions before setting out.
