Horní Podluzí offers several reasons to stay: a ski resort with a range of winter sports, protected waterscapes, and a historic windmill. The elongated village lies in the Lužničky Valley on the border between the Lužické hory mountains and České Švýcarsko. When planning a trip, you can therefore weigh up winter sports, nature, and local history without having to combine these themes into a set itinerary.

Winter sports at the Horní Podluží ski resort

The Horní Podluží ski resort has three ski runs with a combined length of 650 metres. This total refers to all three runs, not to each one individually. The facilities also include a children’s park with gates and slalom poles, as well as snowboard obstacles and jumps of varying difficulty. Alongside the ski runs, dedicated features for the children’s park and snowboarding are also a focus.

As facilities may change, check the ski resort’s current information before making plans. When choosing where to stay, it is particularly helpful to consider whether the ski runs, children’s park, or snowboard features are your priority.

Ponds, wetlands, and birdlife

Velký rybník lies on the western edge of Horní Podluží. The 46-hectare area has been a nature reserve since 1982 and is part of the European Natura 2000 network. It is considered an important ornithological site where numerous migratory birds stop to rest. The shores include wetlands with protected plants. These features give the pond significance for nature enthusiasts beyond its location on the edge of the village.

The Světlík site is also shaped by water and wetland habitats: it includes wet and waterlogged meadows, as well as a transition mire in the northern part of the pond. Světlík is a migratory bird stopover of regional importance; the crane has been recorded there as the most significant breeding bird species. Those interested in birdlife and wetland habitats will find a different focus here than at the ski resort.

The Světlík windmill lies about 1.5 kilometres north of Horní Podluží, in the Světlík (Lichtenberg) district, at an elevation of 500 metres on the shore of the pond of the same name and at the edge of the Světlík Nature Reserve. It is listed as an immovable cultural monument in the cadastral area of Horní Podluží. Its location brings together a specific piece of cultural heritage and the pond and protected-area landscape described above, without requiring a longer itinerary.

Nature trails and cycling routes

The nature trail around Velký rybník connects Rybniště with Horní Podluží and is suitable for pedestrians and cyclists. The Světlík windmill can be reached via the Velký rybník–Světlík nature trail. This describes two distinct options: a circular route connecting two towns and access to the windmill via a named nature trail.

There is also a named cycling route between Horní Podluží and Jiřetín pod Jedlovou. Another cycling route runs from Varnsdorf via Horní Podluží towards Česká Kamenice.

A glimpse into local history

The town’s history also includes textile production, which was firmly established in Horní Podluží even before the beginnings of the Industrial Revolution. Together with the windmill, which is listed as a cultural monument, this historical perspective offers a different way to explore the town than its nature and winter sports. The various themes range from early-established local production to a specific monument and the leisure activities described today. When choosing accommodation, you can first decide which of these aspects matters most for your stay.
