Jiřetín Pod Jedlovou lies in the western part of the Lužické hory Protected Landscape Area. Two distinct themes can help you plan your trip: the town’s mining and architectural history, and destinations around Jedlová and Tolštejn. Information about routes, views, and activities can help you shape your stay around your interests, without having to combine every stop into a set itinerary.

Mining History and Historic Buildings

Jiřetín Pod Jedlovou was founded as a mining town in 1548 after silver ore deposits were discovered. Since 1992, most of the town has been designated an urban conservation area. Its history can therefore be traced not only to a single building, but also to the protected character of large parts of the town.

The Church of the Holy Trinity was consecrated in 1612; most of its furnishings date from the 18th century. The rectory dates from 1755 and features a villa-like architectural style with a mansard roof. On Křížová hora, a complex comprises the Chapel of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre. The complex has been protected as a historic monument since 1969. These dates offer several historical reference points: the town’s 16th-century founding, buildings and protection status from later centuries, and furnishings from the 18th century.

Another historical highlight is Tolštejn, the ruins of a medieval castle first mentioned in 1337. It was built to protect the route from Bohemia to Lusatia. If you are interested in the history of mining, religious buildings, and fortifications, you will find different themes here rather than a single, unified architectural history.

The Jiřetín Mining Museum devotes part of its exhibition to the history of mining in Jiřetín Pod Jedlovou and the surrounding area. The exhibition also includes the “Hornická naučná stezka Údolí Milířky” mining trail. As of August 2026, the museum was closed to the public for technical reasons. Check whether it is still closed before visiting.

Jedlová: Views and Activities on the Mountain

On a clear day, Jedlová offers a panoramic view stretching from the Ore Mountains to the Krkonoše Mountains. The stone observation tower on the mountain is 23 metres high and was built in 1891. The Jedlová Rope Course is also located on the summit, next to the observation tower. A ski lift leads to Jedlová, and there are cross-country ski trails in the surrounding area. Views, a rope course, and winter sports are therefore different options to consider for your stay.

Visitors to Jedlová can rent all-terrain scooters and ride down one of five routes to the lower lift station. Mountain carts are also available for children and adults. Availability and route operations may change; check these details before making plans. At the local Jedlová restaurant, you can try a regional speciality: a yeast dumpling with blueberries.

Routes and Trip Planning

The 9.4-kilometre “Okolím Jiřetína pod Jedlovou” route starts in the market square, goes via Křížová hora to Jedlová and Tolštejn, and returns to Jiřetín Pod Jedlovou. It offers a different route option from the sixth stage of the Hřebenovka, which runs via Krásná Lípa, Horní Podluží, Jiřetín Pod Jedlovou, Jedlová, and Tolštejn to Jedlová railway station. The fourth stage of Via Nisa Crucis runs from Jiřetín Pod Jedlovou to Hvozd (Hochwald). Each route lists different places and endpoints; compare them to see which best fits your plans.

The “Vandrování po Tolštejnském panství” game is part of the Tolštejnské panství tourism project; participants can purchase either a mini pass or a regular pass. Participation details may change. The Tolštejnské slavnosti celebrates traditions, crafts, and medieval life and takes place annually. As the dates vary each year, check the dates for the year of your trip.
