Castle gardens with a Baroque history, a hydrological monument on the Elbe and marked running routes on Kvádrberk give Děčín a varied character. Castle, Garden and City History
Růžová zahrada, formerly known as Lóžová zahrada, was created towards the end of the 17th century during the major Baroque renovation of Děčín Castle under Count Maxmilián Thun. Around 700 roses were planted in the garden, including 16 historic varieties. You can enter the garden after buying a ticket at the ticket office of Děčín Castle. Exhibitions can be visited at the castle year-round; individual exhibition themes may change.
A guided city tour begins in the courtyard of Děčín Castle and passes through historic districts, along the banks of the Elbe, and through the castle park and gardens, with their viewpoints. At the Děčín Regional Museum, the exhibition “Město na louce” explores the earliest history of the city. Exhibits include archaeological finds such as medieval pottery shards, skeletal remains and small metal objects. Another exhibition, “Vývoj lodní dopravy na Labi”, presents more than 30 ship models illustrating the development of shipbuilding and the history of shipping in Bohemia.
The Hladový kámen also connects the city's history with the river: it is considered one of Central Europe's oldest hydrological monuments. Its oldest legible inscription dates from 1616. In dry months, the stone emerges above the surface of the Elbe when water levels are low.
The Děčín Synagogue was built in 1906–1907 in a pseudo-Oriental style with prominent Art Nouveau elements. Following extensive reconstruction, it is now an important centre of cultural and social life in the city. Městské divadlo Děčín presents professional drama, opera, operetta and ballet performances, as well as classical music concerts. The theatre also has a theatre café and a gallery in the foyer. Trails, Rocks and Excursions on the Elbe
The Pastýřská stezka educational trail is a family-friendly nature and learning experience on the sandstone massif of Pastýřská stěna in the city centre. It is distinct from the loop trail at Pastýřská stěna: this is an easy walk of approximately three kilometres with numerous rest stops. Trail conditions may vary depending on the season.
Kvádrberk has four marked running routes of varying difficulty through shaded terrain. They range in length from 750 to 2,750 metres. The routes can also be used for Nordic walking and running with dogs. They offer a different level of exercise from the approximately three-kilometre walk at Pastýřská stěna.
The via ferrata at Pastýřská stěna has 16 free-to-access routes of varying difficulty. The routes are considered suitable even for climbers with no prior climbing experience. Equipment rental is available for a fee; climbing is prohibited in the rain or when the rock face is wet.
The Labská stezka runs between Děčín and Dolní Žleb and offers views of sandstone cliffs in the Elbe Canyon. Conditions and transport connections may vary. Boat excursions depart from Smetanovo nábřeží in Děčín and can be combined with hiking or cycling trips. Boat schedules are seasonal and subject to change.
Wildlife and Water Activities
At Děčín Zoo, animal-viewing facilities include a children's area, a petting zoo, interactive installations and several educational trails. The Rajské ostrovy exhibition features the largest marine aquarium in the Ústecký kraj. It presents habitats and species from coral reefs, tropical rainforests, semi-deserts and mangrove coasts; individual species displays may change.
Děčín Aquapark has a 25-metre indoor pool, a pool with water attractions, whirlpools and three waterslides. The 25-metre outdoor pool is open year-round and heated to 25 °C. The summer pool offers a wild water current, massage loungers and water fountains. Massages are available at the aquapark's wellness centre.
