Žeravice combines sacred monuments and the history of Komenský with wine tastings and cycling. Its cultural sites range from the Church of the Beheading of St. John the Baptist and the cemetery to the Memorial; cellar tastings and the Bzenecká Wine Trail offer different experiences. When planning, it is worth checking the visiting arrangements: the church and Memorial have different ways of arranging appointments, and you should coordinate a tasting with the winery in advance. This will help you decide which themes to focus on during your stay and what needs to be arranged beforehand.
Church and protected monument complex
The Church of the Beheading of St. John the Baptist was built between 1722 and 1728. Its protected monument status also covers the surrounding wall, two gates, and the grounds of the enclosed site. The monument complex therefore comprises more than just the church building. You can arrange a visit to the church by phone with the parish. Coordinate your visit with them and take the arrangements into account when planning.
Cemetery chapel and sandstone cross
The Chapel of St. Barbara in the cemetery was built in 1689; its shingle roof continues to be maintained. At the protected cemetery in Žeravice, the sandstone cross is a cultural monument positioned centrally along the axis of the access path to the chapel. This distinguishes the chapel’s construction date and roof maintenance from the cross’s specific position: both details belong to the cemetery but describe different aspects of its monuments.
The Jan Amos Komenský Memorial
The “Památník Jana Amose Komenského” Memorial stands on the site of the former gathering place of the Bohemian Brethren. The 1616 synod provides another historical connection: it was then that 24-year-old Jan Amos Komenský was ordained as a priest in Žeravice. The Memorial also houses an exhibition of folk art and traditional crafts. The history and exhibition offer different points of interest for visitors. You can arrange a visit to the Memorial in advance through the Žeravice municipal office.
Another monument by the roadside
The Sloup Bičovaného Krista (morový sloup) was restored and re-erected in its original location beside the road and a mature tree. Unlike the church, cemetery chapel, and Memorial, the focus here is on the history of a single restored monument and its precisely described location.
Wine tasting and a cycling tour
Vinařství Žůrek offers wine tastings year-round in its cellar on the edge of Žeravice. Tastings usually begin with 10 to 12 samples of the winery’s own wines. If you would like to include this experience in your stay, confirm the tasting directly with the winery before your visit.
For a different perspective on the surrounding area, try the Bzenecká Wine Trail, which is suitable for gravel, trekking, road, and electric bikes. The climbs around Žeravice offer views of orchards and vineyards from observation towers. The cycling experiences described here are therefore centered on climbs and views, while the tasting focuses on the cellar and the winery’s own wines. As the surface and conditions may change, check them before your ride.
