Domanín’s cultural history spans a Baroque manor, sacred art and customs observed throughout the year. Agriculture and viticulture are also part of its heritage. If you are planning a stay focused on culture, you can explore different aspects of the town here: its architectural history, individual works of art and regional traditions.

Baroque Manor and the History of Viticulture

The Domanínský dvůr is a three-winged Baroque building in the centre of Domanín. Its architectural form dates from 1672 to 1678. The manor was restored during this period after the Tatar invasion of Moravia. These dates link the building’s history to a specific period in Moravian history.

The manor’s historic operations included growing cereals, legumes, hemp and grapevines, as well as raising livestock. This adds a picture of its former agricultural use to the story of the building. The history of viticulture is also a subject at the Muzeum a galerie Domanín, which explores its development and original grape varieties.

The museum also covers 18th-century folk architecture, traditional building techniques, folk art, and traditional agriculture and animal husbandry. These subjects bring building styles, crafts and rural life together. Visits are possible by telephone appointment.

Church, Works of Art and Historical Dates

The Church of St Wenceslas (Kostel sv. Václava) was built between 1786 and 1788 and consecrated on 16 November 1788. It contains five paintings by Ignác Raab, four of which depict scenes from the life of St Bernard. The church has three bells, the oldest dating from 1794.

Other historical objects mark different points in time: the wooden missionary cross at the church entrance was made in 1949. Near the church stands a stone statue of St John of Nepomuk, a work by an unknown artist from 1803. In Domanín, an iron cross is described as the oldest of the Domanínské kříže; it bears the date 1768. This places the cross before the church’s consecration, while the statue and missionary cross add later dates.

Customs Throughout the Year

At Easter, Domanín observes the tradition of the pomlázková obchůzka on Easter Monday. The svatováclavské krojované hody take place in September. Their traditional programme includes Recht and Kranz, a procession, a festive Mass, a formal celebration and the subsequent Hod festivities. The two customs offer different seasonal points of interest; if you want to plan your trip around a festival, confirm the dates locally in advance.

Planning Your Visit

To visit the Libuše Domanínská Memorial Room on a Saturday or Sunday, you must make a telephone appointment two days in advance. The memorial room can also be opened through the municipal office; arrange this with the municipality before your trip. This lets you take the visiting arrangements into account when planning, without assuming that spontaneous access is available.

It is also worth checking in advance if you are considering a bike ride: a route description updated in 2007 shows the Moravská vinná cyklostezka passing through Domanín. Check the current route and signposting before setting out. Together with the seasonal customs and visits that require an appointment, this makes for a clear practical distinction: some sights can be explored independently of festival dates, while others require coordination or an up-to-date route check.
