Blatnička offers several reasons to stay, which you can weigh according to your interests: Borky is known for its geology and palaeontology, Tradice Slovácka for preserving local folk costumes, and the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary for its history spanning several periods. A cycling route through the village adds another option. When planning your trip, you can choose between natural history, regional culture, local history and cycling.
Borky: Geological Strata and Fossils
The protected natural monument of Borky lies on the southeastern edge of Blatnička. It was formed by a road cutting along a local road. Flysch sediments are exposed at the site, where the boundary between the Palaeocene and Eocene is visible. Fossils of marine animals and traces they left behind have also been found. Borky thus brings together rock strata, a visible boundary between two geological epochs and traces of ancient marine life. The geological site is accessible by car without access restrictions. Anyone interested in natural history will find a specific focus here, beyond a general description of the landscape.
Folk Costumes and Tradice Slovácka
Tradice Slovácka offers a different focus. The organisation runs a folk costume workshop in Blatnička, housed in a reconstructed school building that is 100 years old, and is committed to preserving local folk costume traditions. Visitors can see a permanent exhibition on folk costumes; Tradice Slovácka also offers exhibitions and lectures. The subject can be explored through several offerings: the exhibition is aimed at visitors, while the workshop and the organisation’s conservation mission focus on preserving local folk costumes.
Borky and Tradice Slovácka differ markedly if you are choosing between nature and culture: one is about geological strata and traces of marine animals, the other about folk costumes and their preservation. You can weigh them according to your own interests, rather than treating nature and culture destinations as interchangeable excursions.
Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and the Isidore Artwork
The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary also offers a specific way to explore local history. It was consecrated on 3 July 1938 and stands on the site of a much older church that burned down in the 17th century. This brings together two clearly distinct historical dates: the fire that destroyed the earlier building and the later consecration of the church. This distinction is important for understanding the history, since the two events belong to different stages in the church’s history.
Another cultural reference is the artwork “Znamení svatého Izidora.” It was installed in 2016 at a pavilion by the entrance to Blatnička. At the time, there were plans to put up a sign at the pavilion about the history of Saint Isidore a short time later.
Blatnička by Bike
Cyclists also have a specific connection to the village: the “Po vinařských stezkách” route passes through Blatnička and includes a section of the Strážnická vinařská stezka. This means that, alongside the individual cultural and geological attractions, a named cycling route is also available as an option for planning your trip.
The route and the sights address different planning questions. Borky, the exhibition and the church each offer a distinct theme within the village; the cycling route places Blatnička along a particular route. So if you choose a destination based first on a specific activity, you can distinguish between a main attraction to visit and a connection to a cycling route.
