A windmill built entirely of wood, a chapel in the village square, and a folk ensemble give Starý Poddvorov a distinct cultural identity. There is also a wine stand run by local winemakers, as well as marked cycling and hiking trails. The sights are located in different places: the mill stands on a hill outside the village, while the chapel is in the village square.

Windmill in a landscape of vineyards and orchards

The Větrný mlýn Starý Poddvorov windmill is a post mill dating from 1880, built entirely of wood. It stands on a hill about 3 km from Starý Poddvorov in the direction of Čejkovice. The surrounding landscape is shaped by vineyards and orchards. The building thus provides a tangible historical landmark within the surrounding cultural landscape.

The grounds are open year-round, and you can also view the windmill from the outside without a guided tour. There is also a stand run by local winemakers on the grounds. They take turns, so each visit gives you the chance to taste wines from a different producer. At least one winemaker is on site each weekend. If a tasting is important to your plans, check in advance when the stand will be staffed.

Folk culture and history in the village

The chapel Kaplička sv. Martina se zvonicí, dating to 1855, stands in the village square. Another trace of local cultural history leads to the primary school, where the children’s folk ensemble Dětský folklorní soubor Kordulka was founded in September 1996. The chapel and the ensemble’s history offer different points of interest: one centers on a dated building, the other on the development of a cultural community.

The Dětské krojované hody, revived by Kordulka, grew from a local event into a festival. Ensembles from the surrounding regions, as well as from Poland and Slovakia, regularly take part. If you would like to experience the festival in person, check the event dates before your trip.

The costume lending service for the Podluží ethnographic region is also based in Starý Poddvorov. Individual costume pieces and complete costumes can be borrowed by prior telephone arrangement. Borrowing therefore requires arranging it by phone in advance; the service adds a practical connection to regional dress to the history of Kordulka and the hody.

Cycling and hiking

The marked Podluží cycling route passes through Starý Poddvorov and is part of the Moravské vinařské stezky network. Check its status before your trip. For hiking, a blue-marked route passes through the village and continues via Mikulčice, Josefov, Nový Poddvorov, Hodonín, and Vlkoš. The information clearly distinguishes the cycling and hiking routes; for the hike, the sequence of places shows how Starý Poddvorov is part of a route that includes several other named places.

To choose a focus for your visit, you can prioritize the history of the mill and the wine stand on its grounds, folk culture in the village, or the marked trails. Search specifically for hotels in Starý Poddvorov and plan your visit around whichever of these aspects of the village matters most to your trip.
