In Strážnice, you can plan a stay around folk culture, Jewish history, wine and river scenery. The open-air museum offers a particularly vivid experience: it includes folk architecture dating from the 18th century onwards, as well as more than 60 fascinating structures across an area of 16 hectares. Wine-growing buildings and their equipment, along with a vineyard, make wine-growing from its earliest days to the present a distinct exhibition theme.
Folk Culture and Festival
Events and programmes at the open-air museum showcase activities including pottery, weaving on a loom, the traditional craft of glove-making, basket weaving and making krpce. The craft demonstrations take place as part of events and programmes.
A regular date for culture enthusiasts is the last weekend in June, when the “Mezinárodní folklorní festival Strážnice” takes place every year. Programme details vary from year to year. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the programme for the relevant year.
Jewish History and the Town Museum
Strážnice Synagogue houses the permanent exhibition “Žíli mezi námi” about the history of the Jewish population of Strážnice. Visitors can see the interior of the synagogue, exhibitions on Jewish topics and the Jewish cemetery. Opening information is seasonal; check current visiting arrangements before your trip.
Strážnice Town Museum features permanent exhibitions on local history and nature, associations, postcards, furniture, ceramics and blue-printing. The cultural venues have different focuses: the open-air museum centres on folk architecture and crafts, the synagogue on the history of the Jewish population, and the town museum on local history and other collection areas.
For a view beyond the exhibition spaces, Strážní bílá věž offers a different perspective. From a height of almost 20 m, enjoy a special view over the town of Strážnice, Pomoraví and the surrounding landscape.
Wine: From Exhibition to Tasting
You can encounter wine-growing outside the open-air museum, too. Hotařská búda houses a small exhibition on wine-growing. Wine tastings take place among the barrels in the historic cellars of Zámecké sklepy. These offer two different ways to explore the subject: an exhibition about wine-growing and a tasting in a historic cellar setting.
Boats and River Scenery
Small boats and cabin boats can be rented at Strážnice harbour on the Baťa Canal. Regular boat trips from the harbour to the harbour at Petrov are also available. Renting a boat and taking a trip to a set destination are different ways to enjoy your time on the water. Before travelling, check whether rentals are currently available; boat trip schedules are seasonal and should also be checked in advance.
The protected natural monument of Osypané břehy is a nature destination in its own right, 3 km northwest of the town of Strážnice. It comprises an unregulated stretch of the Morava with three pronounced meanders and adjoining forests. Different interests can therefore guide your choice of activities: folk architecture and crafts, Jewish and local history, wine, views, boating or a protected river landscape.
