Přeštěnice combines chapels with a hilly landscape that, on a clear day, offers views as far as the distant Šumava (Bohemian Forest). Different highlights can help you find your way around: the history of the chapels on the village square and at other named locations, the municipality’s highest hill, and cycling, horse riding and a regularly held music festival. This can help you decide whether local history, the landscape or a specific activity should be the focus of your stay.

Chapels and Local History

The Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary stands on the village square. It was blessed on 15 August 1883, and the first Mass was celebrated there on the same day. The altarpiece was created by academic painter Jan Heřman from Prague. The specific date and the detail about the altarpiece complement each other, connecting the history of the building with the day it was blessed and a named artist.

Another chapel with a precise location is the Koutník Chapel, beside house No. 35 in the lower part of Přeštěnice. It was built in 1933 in connection with the reported recovery of František Koutník’s son. This religious account forms part of the chapel’s origin story; the recovery is presented as a reported event.

There are also chapels with their own historical points of reference in Mlčkov, Týnice and Držkrajov. In Mlčkov, there is a wayside chapel of the Virgin Mary of Sepekov, dating from 1795. The chapel in Týnice is dedicated to Our Lady of Klášter and dates from 1884. The Chapel of the Holy Trinity in Držkrajov was built in its present form in 1907. Each date gives the three buildings its own point of reference in time, while the village-square chapel is associated with a specific church event: its blessing and the first Mass in 1883.

The local history extends beyond these individual chapels. Přeštěnice is first mentioned in historical records in 1379. The village also historically belonged to the Rožmberk family’s estates, which were connected with Příběnice Castle. Alongside the religious buildings, the village’s early mention in historical records and its historical ownership provide different points of interest.

Views and Landscape

At 610 metres above sea level, Stráže is the highest hill in Přeštěnice. On a clear day, the view from there reaches as far as the distant Šumava (Bohemian Forest). Přeštěnice also has a foothill character, and there are pleasant views from the village itself. If you are planning to take in the distant panorama, clear conditions are essential at Stráže; the view from the village offers a different perspective.
