The Cerhonice manor farm was an administrative center, and the castle complex grew out of an older fortress. Together with the literary connection to Ladislav StroupeĹľnickĂ˝, these associations give the town a distinctive cultural and historical character. A chapel and cycling routes through Cerhonice also offer practical starting points for planning a stay.
Manor Farm, Castle, and Memorial Sites
The Cerhonice manor farm served as an administrative center for the area on the left bank of the Vltava. Until the end of the 15th century, it was the estate’s only farm. After the mid-16th century, the farm experienced its greatest period of growth; this included the expansion of fish farming. These milestones illustrate different aspects of its history: the administration of the area and the farm’s later development.
The castle complex was created by converting an older fortress and is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. Other memorial sites include the Red Cross in the forests of Vráž and three identical chapels built in a regular triangle around Cerhonice. They serve as a lasting reminder of a bloody event. Until the First World War, a penitential procession took place every year on the first Sunday in June from Cerhonice to the Red Cross.
Literature with a Direct Connection to the Town
Ladislav Stroupežnický was born in Cerhonice on January 6, 1850. His play “Naši furianti” is set in his hometown. Cerhonice is therefore connected both to the author’s biography and to the setting of his work. These are two distinct literary connections: Stroupežnický’s birth in the town and the play’s setting there.
Chapel of St. Lawrence
The Chapel of St. Lawrence, including its altar, has been restored. It is consecrated, and services are held there again. If you would like to attend a service during your visit, check the current schedule in advance. Alongside the historical associations of the manor farm and castle complex, the chapel also provides a religious point of interest during your stay.
Cycling Through Cerhonice
Cycle Route 31 passes through Cerhonice. The Alšova Trail can be ridden as a cycling tour from Ostrovec through Cerhonice to Mirotice. The details offer different kinds of guidance: the first identifies a numbered cycle route through the town, while the second describes a tour with a starting point, a stop along the way, and a destination. This lets you choose whether to follow a route through Cerhonice or the tour described. Check current route conditions before setting out.
Choose the Focus of Your Stay
Two different focuses are available when planning your stay: the manor farm, castle complex, and literature offer an introduction to the town’s cultural history, while the Alšova Trail provides a specific cycling-tour option.
