Visitors drawn to Cizova for its architectural history will find other historic buildings alongside the Church of St James the Greater, as well as views across the landscape. The town can be explored in different ways: sacred architecture, local history and routes on foot or by bike each offer a different focus. Train and bus connections are also useful when planning your trip.

Church and sacred architectural history

The Church of St James the Greater is considered Cizova’s oldest and most valuable architectural monument. Its core is Gothic, with additional architectural features attributed to the Písek-Zvíkov building workshop. The Gothic core and the features attributed to the workshop offer two distinct clues for placing the church in its historical context. The church was probably built as a parish church no later than before the mid-13th century.

The Chapel of St Barbara was built in 1759 south of the church’s main entrance. It contains a 5 × 2.7-metre crypt, which was probably used for the burial of families of senior estate officials. The Cizova hospital was established in 1762–1763 for eight elderly and poor people. The church and chapel represent the history of sacred architecture, while the hospital is notable for its social purpose. Together, these buildings illustrate different historical themes rather than a single period.

Castle and other historic buildings

The municipality bought Cizova Castle in 2013, and it has been gradually restored since then. The former noble brewery was built by Václav Mikuláš Deym in the second half of the 17th century. The three-storey Baroque granary dates from 1734. It stands on a slope alongside the road and is a prominent feature in the area. A stone reconciliation cross can be seen on the road to Blatná, almost opposite a chapel.

The examples can be distinguished by their historical features: the brewery is defined by its former function, its builder and its construction date; the granary stands out for its Baroque style and three storeys. The castle, meanwhile, represents a more recent development, with its municipal purchase and gradual restoration since 2013. These distinctions give culturally minded travellers several specific ways to explore Cizova’s history.

Views and routes

From Mount Sv. Jakuba above Cizova, there are views of PĂsek and the surrounding municipalities; on a clear day, Ĺ umava is also visible. The church can be reached via two signposted hiking trails. By bike, cycle route 1161 runs from Cizova to Chlaponice, passing the church. The choice between hiking and cycling is clear: the signposted trails lead to the church, while the cycle route passes it on the way between Cizova and Chlaponice. Check route conditions and look out for signs on site before setting off.

Getting there and holiday activity

Cizova has train and bus connections. Check the current timetable before travelling so you can plan your arrival around your preferred connection. The municipality also offers the holiday activity “Putování s Mušlíkem” and provides a map to download and print. If you’d like to include the activity in your travel plans, you can view or print the map in advance.
