Milevsko combines sacred architecture with walking routes and viewpoints in the surrounding area. The monastery and the Milevské Museum provide specific cultural highlights; outdoors, routes lead through rolling countryside, past ponds and through forests. When planning your trip, you can choose between culture, nature or a mix of both. The destinations below differ mainly in whether they focus on history, landscapes or information about nature.
Monastery history and sacred architecture
Founded in 1187, Milevsko Monastery is considered the oldest monastery in South Bohemia. The “Sakrální stavby” (Sacred Buildings) tour includes the Basilica of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary (bazilika Navštívení Panny Marie), combining a specific sightseeing visit with the monastery’s sacred focus. Tour times may change, so check the current schedule in advance. The Cemetery Church of St. Giles (Hřbitovní kostel sv. Jiljí) is an immovable cultural monument of the Czech Republic.
City history, archaeology and art
On the ground floor of the Milevské Museum, the exhibition presents evidence of the history of the town and, in part, the monastery, from the 16th century to the mid-20th century. The archaeological exhibition has a different focus: its finds come mainly from the area around Milevsko. Historical records and archaeological objects, mostly of local origin, therefore offer two distinct perspectives.
Gallery M provides spaces for art exhibitions, events and programmes for small audiences. Individual programmes may change; if you are interested in a particular event, check the latest programme information in advance. The building itself is also an architectural highlight: the gallery is housed in a historic Baroque building dating from the late 17th century, with architectural features from the period of its construction still preserved.
Routes, views and nature
The Milevský vyhlídkový okruh (Milevsko Scenic Circuit) is 19 km long and leads through the area around Milevsko: over hills and meadows, past ponds and through forests. Its distance and changing landscape make the route different in character from a visit to a single viewpoint. Route descriptions and conditions may change, so check them before setting out.
Hůrka Hill offers a view of Milevsko Monastery. The Stations of the Cross (Křížová cesta) offers views of the monastery, the town of Milevsko and the surrounding area. For a natural history perspective, the “Život na Hůreckém lesíku” (Life in Hůrecký Grove) educational and experience trail provides information about nature. Each destination has a different focus: a view of the monastery, views of the town and surrounding area, or information about nature along a route. You can choose an outing based on which of these interests you most.
Swimming and local information
The Milevské koupaliště outdoor pool has two swimming pools measuring 25 × 12 m and 21.5 × 7.5 m, as well as a 5 × 3 m paddling pool. Facilities may change, so check the latest information about the pool configuration before your visit.
The Milevsko Tourist Information Centre sells tourist maps and guidebooks. The selection may vary, so check in advance if you are looking for a particular map or book.
