Temešvár is located on the left bank of the Vltava, on the Orlík Reservoir. Its history stretches from a manor farm and the former name Nová Ves to being named after the Romanian city of Temešvár. The Podolský Bridge also brings several topics together: its construction history, dimensions and role at the demarcation line. Other attractions include Bronze Age finds, a tourist route through the town, and water sports and boat traffic on the reservoir. When planning your trip, you can consider history and activities on the water as separate points of interest.

Local history: the manor farm, Nová Ves and the present-day name

Temešvár developed on the site of a manor farm. The settlement was initially called Nová Ves. It was later named Temešvár after the Romanian city of the same name, where Austrian troops defeated the Turkish army. This sequence distinguishes the local origins from the later history of the name: first the manor farm, then Nová Ves as the settlement’s name, and finally the name Temešvár. The town’s history thus reaches back to the settlement’s beginnings and also extends beyond the region.

Podolský Bridge: location, dimensions and history

The Podolský Bridge is located between Podolí and Temešvár on Road 29, which connects Tábor and Písek. Temešvár is also on the main road from Písek to Tábor, immediately before the bridge. The present-day bridge was built between 1939 and 1943. It is 510 metres long, and its roadway is 65 metres above the river. These two measurements describe different dimensions of the structure: its length and the height of the roadway above the water. Historically, the Podolský Bridge was the American position located furthest behind the demarcation line. A tourist route also passes through Temešvár from north to south. The road location, the bridge itself and the route through the town are therefore all useful reference points for your trip.

On the Orlík Reservoir: water sports, boat traffic and fishing

Water sports are available on the Orlík Reservoir near Temešvár. There is also local boat traffic on the reservoir, which tourists can use. If you plan a trip, check the timetable in advance. Another specific access point for anglers is Stará cesta: in the cadastral area of Temešvár, it passes the campsite and leads down to the water. There is also a spot designated for anglers with disabilities. Local access conditions may change, so check them before your visit.

Bronze Age traces

Temešvár is also associated with specific Bronze Age find and exhibition locations. Several hoards of Bronze Age artefacts were discovered in Sloupovna Forest, within the cadastral area of the town. Bronze bracelets from Temešvár are on display in the permanent exhibition at the Prácheň Museum in Písek. The museum display may change, so check in advance if the exhibition is to be a fixed part of your plans. The finds at Sloupovna and the display at the museum in Písek offer two different ways to explore the subject.
