Two medieval fortresses and a château give Kestřany a distinct cultural and historical focus, while churches and chapels add further architectural highlights. There are also marked hiking trails around the historic site, a cycling route to Kestřany, and destinations in the Otava landscape. When choosing where to stay, it is therefore worth considering whether you would like to focus on the town itself, outdoor activities on the trails, or the surrounding area.

Fortresses, Château and Chapels

The historic ensemble comprises two well-preserved medieval fortresses and a château. At its centre is the Church of St Catherine, opposite the château; the two fortresses are about 100 metres from the church. Its cruciform layout gives the church a clearly identifiable architectural feature. Also in the centre is the Chapel of St John of Nepomuk, an important architectural and urban-planning feature of Kestřany. The church and chapel add distinct architectural highlights to the town centre.

Other protected buildings lie outside the centre. The “Kalvárie” chapel is in the south of Kestřany, near the Otava, and is a protected architectural and urban-planning feature. Also in the south, the highly visible “sv. Floriána” niche chapel stands at a road junction; it too is a protected urban-planning feature. Northwest of Kestřany, on the country lane to Nové Kestřany, is the protected “boží muka” wayside shrine, which shapes the landscape. Their different locations make these buildings a point of interest beyond the town centre.

Hiking Trails, Cycling Routes and Getting There

Yellow- and blue-marked hiking trails run around the area of the two fortresses and the château. The nearest railway station is also relevant if you are arriving on foot: it is in Sudoměř u Písku. From there, a footpath follows the blue-marked hiking trail to Kestřany. No walking time or distance is specified, so you can use the trail markings to plan your route.

There are also two specific options for cycling trips. Cycle Route 1045 leads to Kestřany. The 24-kilometre “Povodím Otavy” tour runs from Strakonice via Hajská, Štěkeň and Kestřany to Písek. While Route 1045 names Kestřany as its destination, the “Povodím Otavy” tour gives a total distance and several places along its route. Depending on your cycling plans, you can therefore choose between a route to Kestřany and a described longer ride through several towns.

The Otava Landscape and Gold Panning

Near Kestřany, the gold-panning complex on the right bank of the Otava, between Strakonice and Kestřany, includes a preserved area of spoil heaps. This area is 600 metres long and 50 to 150 metres wide. Alongside the historic buildings, the landscape offers another connection with the region’s history.

Kestřany is also a traditional venue for the annual gold-panning competitions on the Otava. If you would like to plan your trip around a competition, check the event dates in advance. Velký Potoční Pond is now a natural monument. Visitors can enjoy newly planted vineyards and a peaceful park around the fortresses. Alongside the historic sites, these also offer natural and landscape-related options to consider when planning your visit.

A Practical Note for Your Visit

The Lower Fortress is currently closed to the public. If it is the specific focus of your visit, take the closure into account and check its status before travelling. For the rest of your plans, you can treat the central buildings, the trails around the fortress and château grounds, and the cycling routes as separate points of interest.
