At the confluence of the Trhosvinenský and Farský streams, Trhové Sviny lies where the Třeboň Basin gives way to hilly terrain leading towards Šumava. The town thus combines a distinctive landscape with a historic square, church art and destinations for cultural and nature excursions. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between seeing the architectural and artistic landmarks, visiting the natural swimming area and taking a full-day cycling tour.

The Square and Church Art

The Trhové Sviny Urban Heritage Zone is centred on a square with a town hall and townhouses featuring arcades. There is also a hexagonal stone fountain dating from 1868 in a square in the town. Together, the town hall, arcaded houses and fountain offer tangible insights into the town’s historic layout.

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary reveals another layer of history: it was originally built in the Early Gothic style and later remodelled in the Late Gothic style. Its furnishings include a Baroque altar with the Late Gothic “Trhové Sviny Madonna” from 1520. The building’s history and its artwork therefore come from different periods, offering two distinct ways to explore the church’s history.

Other Cultural Destinations Nearby

Less than two kilometres south of Trhové Sviny stands the pilgrimage Church of the Holy Trinity. It was built between 1708 and 1710 as a Baroque church with a central plan. Three altars and a hexagonal ambulatory form part of its distinctive layout. A triangular chapel with a spring is located nearby. The spring was traditionally believed to have healing powers for eye ailments—a cultural tradition, not a medical claim.

About two kilometres from the town is Buškův hamr, a preserved water-powered hammer mill dating from around the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. The complex includes a forge and historic tools; three water wheels power a drop hammer, grinding machine and bellows. The exhibition “Crafts (Not Only) on the Water” explores crafts and craftspeople in Trhové Sviny and the surrounding area. Exhibition details may change, so check them before planning a visit.

The Kovářské dny (Blacksmithing Days) have traditionally taken place nearby on the third weekend of August. The programme includes blacksmithing demonstrations, a craft market and entertainment. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the specific dates in advance.

Natural Swimming and Cycling

The Velký rybník natural swimming area is at the edge of town on the road towards Nové Hrady. Velký rybník is 1.5 kilometres from the town centre and can be reached on foot, by bicycle or by car. There is a seasonal snack stand at the swimming area; availability may vary.

The “K rodišti Jana Žižky z Trocnova” cycling tour is considerably more extensive: it is 63.7 kilometres long, passes through Trhové Sviny and is described as a moderately difficult full-day tour. It therefore takes a different amount of time from a visit to Velký rybník. Trhové Sviny is also a starting point for hiking routes in the Slepičí hory, which are less than ten kilometres away.

Information and Cultural Programme

The Trhové Sviny Information Centre provides information about the town and its immediate and wider surroundings. It also organises exhibitions and educational, cultural and sporting events for visitors and local residents. Current offerings may change; checking the latest programme is a good idea if you are looking for specific events.

The Trhové Sviny Municipal Cultural Centre lists six evenings featuring theatre, comedy and music in its programme for September to December 2026. Individual performances are date-specific, so check the dates if you want to include an event in your travel plans. When looking for accommodation, you can first consider whether the town’s cultural offerings, nearby destinations or a full-day cycling tour will be the focus of your stay.
