In Teindles (Doudleby), the river landscape meets local history. Doudleby lies in a bend of the Malše; on a hill above the river stands the Church of St. Vincent, on the site of an old Slavic hillfort. Seasonal folklore events and organized cycling and hiking tours add to the appeal. You can tailor your visit to culture, outdoor activities or the time of year.
Church and Local History
A rampart several metres high and about 100 metres long has survived from the hillfort. The church shows several distinct building phases: the sacristy and presbytery are Gothic structures from the 14th century, and the frescoes in the sacristy date from around 1350. By contrast, the church’s present flat-ceilinged form and tower date from 1708 to 1709. Medieval structures and frescoes thus stand alongside a later redesign.
The Čapkův Bridge also has an established place in local history: its opening was celebrated on 25 August 1929. It is also a landmark on the cycling route, which offers a detour to the church.
Folklore Events on Different Dates
The Doudlebské dožínky folklore festival is held annually and has been celebrated since 1997. The festivities include a folk-costume procession and afternoon outdoor performances at Čapák, including performances by Doudleban and Kovářovan. The programme may vary from year to year; check the current date and schedule before travelling.
Masopust includes a Rose Procession through the village, organized by the Doudleban folklore group. Its exact date depends on Easter. If one of these festivals is the reason for your trip, plan around the relevant event date.
Cycling and Hiking Throughout the Year
Na kole okolo Doudleb is a cycling tour traditionally held in June. Covering about 30 to 40 kilometres, it is particularly suitable for families with children. Okolo Doudleb is a recurring hiking event held on the third Saturday in September; its route is about 15 kilometres long and passes through the surrounding area. Choosing between the two means choosing a different travel time and distance: cycling in June versus a shorter hiking route in September. Check the current event details in advance.
Another cycling option is the Velešín–Roudné route, which runs from Hamr via Doudleby to Plav. From the Čapkův Bridge, a 200-metre detour leads to the Church of St. Vincent. This provides a direct connection for a visit by bike; route conditions may change, so it is worth checking the latest information before setting out.
The Malše as Part of the Trip
There is also a regional tradition on the water: Odemykání Malše refers to the tradition of travelling along the Malše, which has existed since the 1990s. Details may vary from one edition to another. Along with the river bend, festivals and different tours, the Malše offers another way to experience Doudleby—without requiring every activity to fit into the same itinerary.
