Štichovice combines its location along the middle reaches of the Střela with a distinctive village centre and historic landmarks. The village lies five kilometres east of Manětín, at an elevation of 458 metres, on a plateau above the Manětínský potok stream. Its setting can therefore be understood both in relation to the Střela landscape and to the higher terrain.
Location and Landscape
Štichovice is among the settlements that mark the boundary of Horní Střela Nature Park. The nature park protects the deeply cut, meandering valley of the Střela, with typical forests on rocky slopes. This brings together two perspectives: the village’s location on the park boundary and the broader landscape protected by the nature park.
Village Centre and History
The village’s appearance is notable for its large, circular village green, dominated by a pond. This gives the village centre a distinctive spatial feature. Those interested in the village’s history can also place it in context using two different points in time: Štichovice was first mentioned in writing in 1406 and appears among the possessions of the Order of St John in Manětín in the first half of the 15th century. The first written mention and the attribution of ownership are distinct historical details.
Church, Chapel and Wayside Shrine
The Church of Saints Peter and Paul is a prominent landmark in Štichovice. Its construction dates back to the 14th century, and it was extensively remodelled in the 17th century. This allows its medieval origins to be distinguished from the later building phase, rather than assigning the church to just one period.
Beside it stands the small village chapel, dating from the early 19th century. It has a three-sided termination, a low triangular gable with a sundial, and a roof turret on the ridge. The chapel thus provides a different historical and architectural accent from the older church, which was later remodelled.
Another landmark is the stone wayside shrine southwest of the village green. It stands on the right-hand side of the road leading out of the village towards the so-called New Road to Manětín. The shrine is a sandstone cross on a cylindrical column and a rectangular base; the year 1721 is engraved on the base. Its location, material, form and date provide specific details that distinguish this monument from the church and chapel.
Monuments in the Cultural Landscape
Beyond these individual structures, numerous crosses and small stone monuments are also part of the character of Štichovice and its surroundings. These include wooden crosses that are regularly renewed. Most of the monuments remain in their original locations and are maintained by local volunteers. This links the historic landmarks with ongoing care by the local community.
This gives visitors two distinct points of focus when choosing a destination: the village green, church, chapel and wayside shrine represent the village itself and its history; the nature park offers a landscape perspective, with its valley and forests on rocky slopes. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Štichovice, this distinction can help you decide what you would like to focus on during your stay.
