Nekmíř combines a forested setting with specific historical points of interest. A monument commemorates the early use of wagons as a defensive formation; the chapel, the statue of St John of Nepomuk and the château architecture lead into other periods of history. When choosing Nekmíř, you can focus on its historical connections or its natural surroundings.
Landscape, protected area and cycling
Geomorphologically, Nekmíř lies in the Plaská pahorkatina, which forms the central part of the Plzeňská pahorkatina. The landscape around the village is predominantly characterised by mixed forests, with pine dominant among the conifers. The regional classification describes the broader setting, while the forest description gives a clearer picture of the area’s specific character.
The Bažantnice Nature Reserve includes a valuable mixed-forest complex with abundant herbaceous undergrowth and a streamside landscape. For nature enthusiasts, the reserve draws attention not only to the trees but also to the vegetation on the forest floor and along the stream.
The municipal sports plan from March 2019 lists a marked local cycling route through Nekmíř. Before setting out, check whether the route markings are still up to date.
On a forest walk in Nekmíř, you may come across pits that recall the brief period of coal mining in the 19th century. The pits make the history of land use tangible: alongside the forest and nature, this limited episode of mining also points to the village’s past.
The cycling route and the forest walk offer different points of focus: when cycling, the current state of the route markings matters; on the walk, it is the historical traces of coal mining.
Commemoration and architectural history
The Památník bitvy Jana Žižky monument was unveiled on 28 July 2017 and commemorates the 1419 battle in which Jan Žižka first used wagons as a defensive formation. Nekmíř’s history is also associated with the earliest documented use of wagons as a defensive formation in the Bohemian lands. This use was improvised and did not yet involve the classic heavy war wagons. The dates serve different purposes: 2017 marks the unveiling of the monument, while 1419 is the year of the battle it commemorates.
The Žižkův památník monument is freely accessible year-round and can be reached via a field track between the newer buildings in Nekmíř. Check the condition of the track before your visit.
The Chapel of St Anne, dating from the 19th century, stands in the centre of the village. Nekmíř is also home to a statue of St John of Nepomuk dating from the second quarter of the 18th century. The statue therefore predates the chapel, which dates from the 19th century.
The monumental central palace of the medieval Tvrz corresponds to the north wing of the Zámek Nekmíř château complex. This specific architectural connection links the medieval fortress with the château complex and provides a clear point of reference in local architectural history for anyone interested in architecture.
