Nýřany brings together a variety of themes: a Neo-Renaissance town hall, churches and chapels, sites commemorating the mining industry, and dense forests nearby. When planning your trip, it is worth considering these themes separately: some offer insight into architectural and urban history, while others are connected with particular seasons or event dates.

Town Hall, Church and Chapel

Nýřany Town Hall is a Neo-Renaissance building dating from 1885. One of its distinctive features is a painted ceiling. A monument in front of the town hall commemorates 13 miners who were shot during the strike of 1890. The building and memorial site thus represent different aspects of the town’s history: the architecture of the late 19th century and the memory of a violent event in the history of the mining community.

The Church of St Procopius also connects architectural history with mining, an important local theme. It was built in 1903–1904 and is single-nave and pseudo-Gothic. “Single-nave” describes a floor plan with one nave. The church is dedicated to St Procopius, the patron saint of miners. Its date and architectural style distinguish it from Nýřany’s older Baroque chapel.

The chapel was rebuilt in the 18th century and, after its restoration in 1991, was dedicated to St Wenceslas. Beside it stands a stone statue of St John of Nepomuk dating from 1862. These dates mark different historical milestones: the chapel’s reconstruction, the statue’s creation and the later restoration and dedication to St Wenceslas. The local history of religious buildings therefore cannot be reduced to a single year of construction.

Mining History and Memorial Sites

The monument in front of the town hall commemorates the 13 miners who were shot during the 1890 strike. Another aspect of the mining heritage is the preserved miners’ colony of the former Humboldt mine in the Humboldtka district. Together, the monument and colony point to different forms of remembrance: a purpose-built memorial and surviving buildings associated with the former mine. The colony is a historic site; individual buildings may not be open to the public. If you plan to visit, check access in advance.

The Rodinné muzeum hraček (Family Toy Museum) offers another perspective on the town’s history. Its collection includes porcelain dolls and antique prams, among other items. The specific objects on display may change. Those interested in historical everyday objects will find a different perspective here than at the churches, town hall or mining memorial sites.

Forests and the Changing Seasons

Dense forests stretch across the area around Nýřany. Waterways are also part of the local landscape: the Vejprnický stream, known in German as the Baitbach, is one of four streams named in connection with Nýřany. These landscape features complement the focus on architecture and mining history, without implying a specific hiking route.

Events and seasonal activities may play a part in choosing when to travel. The Běh města Nýřany (Nýřany Town Run) is a traditional annual sporting event. The Easter walking event “Stopou Janovského vodníka” has been held for many years; check the dates before your trip. In winter, the multi-purpose sports court at the Koupaliště Nýřany leisure swimming pool serves as a natural ice rink. Whether it is actually available may vary, so check the current situation before your visit.

Nýřany therefore offers a range of reasons to choose it as a destination: architectural and commemorative history, a collection of historical toys, nearby forests, events and a seasonal ice rink. If a particular event or the natural ice rink is important to your plans, take the event date or actual availability into account when choosing when to stay.
