Nečtiny can be explored through a variety of historical traces: a neo-Gothic château complex, castle ruins, a church with a eventful history, exhibitions on local history and a themed route alongside the water. Each highlight has its own focus. Architecture and historical events sit alongside the question of how mills harnessed the power of water.
Château, castle and surviving traces
Zámek Nečtiny is a neo-Gothic complex opposite Preitenštein Castle (Breitenstein). Its floor plan is U-shaped, with wings of different lengths enclosing an honor courtyard. The design offers a clear view of the complex: the courtyard is enclosed on several sides, while the wings are not all the same length. The château and the castle are two distinct buildings, each distinguished by its surviving form.
Preitenštein Castle was built on a hill as a large castle before 1333. The ruins include the outer walls of the castle and palace, as well as a passage leading to the cellars. The site is designated an important archaeological site. This classification adds archaeological significance to the visible structural remains, without reducing the ruins to a single surviving feature.
Basalt columns lie below the castle. They may be among the longest in Bohemia—a description that is explicitly tentative. This adds a geological feature associated with the area below the castle to the man-made structures.
Church and local history
St. Anne’s Church was built between 1450 and 1462, destroyed during the Thirty Years’ War, and rebuilt by Václav Adam Kokořovec between 1655 and 1657. Its history can thus be divided into three stages: the medieval construction, wartime destruction and subsequent 17th-century rebuilding. This chronology gives the building a different historical focus from the castle, whose construction dates to before 1333.
The interior layout is also described in detail: the church has a single-nave interior with a flat ceiling, a semicircular triumphal arch, a wide chancel and a sacristy with a burial place. “Single-nave” means that the interior does not have multiple parallel aisles. Together, the wide chancel and triumphal arch provide a clear picture of the layout, while the sacristy with its burial place is another specific feature of the interior.
Regional exhibitions
The Regionální muzeum Nečtiny features several exhibitions on different topics. “Četnická stanice” explores the former gendarmerie station in Nečtiny, one of the twelve gendarmerie stations in the Kralovice political district. It focuses on a local institution and its place within the district at the time. The exhibition display may change.
“Lesnictví a dřevařství” explores the importance of forests as a source of livelihood and as a source of raw materials for glassworks and other businesses. Another exhibition, “Národopis Nečtinska,” is housed in a log-cabin room and presents part of the history of Nečtinsko. The topics offer different perspectives: a historical institution, the role of forests and an exhibition on the region’s history. The displays may also change.
Mills and the power of water
The Mlýnská Trail connects Nečtiny with Manětín and follows the Starý potok through beautiful countryside. Its central theme is mills and the power of water. This sets it apart from the stories of buildings and places: rather than focusing on a single building, the trail explores the use of a natural force and its importance to mills. The route along the named watercourse and its mill theme are both integral to the trail’s character.
If you are choosing between the different highlights, the historic buildings offer varied perspectives on the past, while the Mlýnská Trail focuses on water and mills. For those interested in cultural history, the specific architectural forms, the church’s chronology and the museum exhibitions complement one another. Those interested in the landscape and the use of water will find a different way to explore Nečtiny along the trail.
