The chapel on the steep village green and the ruins of Buben Castle give Plešnice two distinct historical landmarks. There are also marked walking trails and a long-distance cycle route that runs through the village. When planning your visit, it is worth considering the village’s history and your route separately: the village green is in Plešnice, while the trail to the castle starts at the railway station and continues beyond Buben.

Village Green and Chapel

The settlement of Plešnice was founded sometime in the 13th century. The village green lies on a steep slope; the chapel “Kaplička Nejsvětější trojice” (Chapel of the Most Holy Trinity), dating from the first half of the 18th century, stands there. It is listed as a local immovable cultural monument. A painting in the vaulted ceiling depicts angels carrying a cross into the sky. The settlement’s founding and the chapel’s construction belong to different periods in the village’s history: the chapel is considerably younger than the settlement. Its subject adds a specific interior detail to the landmark on the village green.

The Ruins of Buben Castle

The ruins of Buben Castle lie 1,200 m northeast of Plešnice, at the confluence of Úlický potok and the Mže. They are a major archaeological site in the cadastral area of Plešnice. The complex includes an outer ward, a fortified zwinger, a residential tower, an L-shaped palace and a high defensive wall. The castle therefore comprises several distinct structures, from the fortified area to the residential building. It is thought to have served an important strategic and commercial function because it stood on a valley route from Plzeň to Cheb. This function remains a historical interpretation; its location on the valley route is part of the reasoning behind it.

Marked Trails and Getting There

The blue-marked hiking trail to the ruins of Buben Castle starts at Plešnice railway station. The forest path follows Úlický potok and is also suitable for pushchairs. From Buben, the blue trail continues southeast to Tlučná. The ruins are freely accessible; check local access conditions before setting out. Trail conditions may also change, so it is advisable to check the latest information before you leave.

The green-marked hiking trail along the Mže leads towards the Hracholusky Reservoir. For cyclists, long-distance cycle route No. 37 passes through Plešnice. Its stated route runs through Železná, Bělá nad Radbuzou, Stříbro, Pňovany, Nová Jezná, Plešnice, Bdeněves and Plzeň. These offer different route options: a trail to the castle ruins, a trail along the Mže and a long-distance cycle route through the village.

Plešnice can be reached from Plzeň by train in about 21 minutes, with trains running approximately every two hours. Journey times and frequency may change, so check the current timetable before travelling. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can factor the rail connection and the focus of your planned stay— the village green, the hiking trail to the castle or the long-distance cycle route—into your plans.
