In Úherce, the Nový rybník Nature Reserve protects breeding and migratory habitats for waterbirds, as well as a wetland ecosystem of regional importance. Together with the listed Church of St. Joseph, it offers contrasting travel highlights: nature watching and architectural history. There is also an old well, memorial sites and horse riding for children. If you are considering Úherce as a travel destination, you can choose your focus according to whether waterbirds, historic architecture or memorial sites are of particular interest to you.

Nature watching at Nový rybník

The Nový rybník Nature Reserve is located in Úherce. It protects breeding and migratory habitats for waterbirds, as well as a wetland ecosystem of regional importance. An ornithological observation hide was built by the pond in 2009. It is intended to let visitors watch waterbirds without disturbing them. Check whether the hide is accessible before visiting.

St. Joseph's and architectural history

The Church of St. Joseph is a listed building with registration number ÚSKP 1639. The present-day church was completed in 1901 in the Pseudo-Romanesque style, based on plans by Pilsen architect František Josef Erhart. Its year of construction, style and architect offer a specific point of interest for anyone interested in church architecture.

Every year, during the Úherecká pouť held in honour of St. Joseph, the church is opened to visitors. The pouť is a well-attended event for children and adults. If visiting the church is important to your trip, check the dates in advance.

Well, cross and column

The Helka well is about 13.5 metres deep and built entirely of sandstone blocks. It is considered the oldest surviving structure in Úherce. Its recorded depth and construction make it a distinctive part of the area's architectural history.

The Braschkův Cross stands at the junction of K Mexiku Street and the path to Velký rybník. It is considered the best-preserved cross in Úherce. At the junction of Hlavní and Topolová streets stands the Baroque column of St. John of Nepomuk. It was restored with a new statue in 2016. The precise locations and restoration history give each of these monuments its own point of reference in the village landscape.

Memorial sites in Úherce

The memorial sites also highlight different aspects of history. The cemetery in Úherce is designated a cultural monument of local regional significance. It contains a grave for nine Russian soldiers who did not live to see the end of the Second World War. The war memorial in Úherce, unveiled in 1925, commemorates those who fell in the First World War.

Another plaque commemorates Major General Jan Roman Irving. It was unveiled on 19 May 2001 at house E 11 on Hlavní Street. Irving was a pilot with the famous 311th Czechoslovak Bomber Squadron of the Royal Air Force in Great Britain. Together with the war memorial and the grave in the cemetery, the plaque offers further insights into the memorial landscape of Úherce.

Horse riding as another activity
