Two easy-to-explore highlights stand out in Hromnice: Hromnické jezírko, near the village, with its history as a slate quarry, and the architectural history of the village churches. You can plan your trip around whether nature, architecture or an active pursuit is your main interest. The difference is clear: at the lake, the focus is on how the landscape formed and on a complete walk around it; in the churches and historic buildings, the focus is on architectural styles, alterations and spatial forms. When looking for a holiday apartment, this selection can help you decide in advance what you want to focus on during your trip, without limiting it to just one theme.

Hromnické jezírko: Natural Monument and Quarry History

Hromnické jezírko is a protected natural monument near the village of Hromnice. It was created artificially as a remnant of a slate quarry. Its history is therefore as much a part of this landscape as the lake’s present-day form. There is also a clear restriction for visitors: the lake is not suitable for swimming. A gently ascending path leads to the lake; after about 100 metres, you reach a first viewpoint above the water. You can also walk all the way around Hromnické jezírko. The viewpoint and the circuit offer different perspectives: a view from above and views from along the route around the lake. Hromnické jezírko is said to be up to 18 metres deep.

Churches and Architectural History in Hromnice

St George’s Church in Hromnice has Gothic origins and was completely remodelled in the Baroque Gothic style from 1741 to 1744. The gates in its boundary wall were added in 1749 under Abbot Silvestr Hetzer. The sequence thus spans the Gothic origins, the major remodelling and a later addition to the complex. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Hromnice also has Gothic origins. Important Gothic frescoes can be found in the presbytery; the church was enlarged in the Baroque period by Silvestr Hetzer, Abbot of Plasy. The two churches offer different points of comparison: at St George’s, the complete remodelling stands out; at the Church of the Assumption, it is the combination of Gothic origins, frescoes and Baroque enlargement.

Farm Complex and Village Square

Zámecký statek Býkov is a large, listed farm complex in the rural Baroque style. Its buildings enclose a spacious rectangular courtyard. The farm was built in 1703 by Cistercians, with the Abbot of Plasy Monastery, Evžen Tyttl, playing a major role. The enclosed courtyard gives the complex a distinctive spatial form, while the year of construction and the abbot’s involvement provide a specific historical reference point.

A spacious, regularly circular village square defines the layout of Nynice. It is lined mostly with masonry farmsteads featuring gates and gables, and a large Baroque chapel dominates the square. Nynice is a striking example of high medieval rural town planning. The Chapel of St Catherine in Nynice was built between 1696 and 1701. Architecturally, the focus differs from Býkov: there, the distinctive feature is the rectangular courtyard enclosed by buildings; in Nynice, the focus is on the circular square and the farmsteads around its edge.

Recreational Sports and Music

SportAreál Žichlice offers a different kind of leisure activity: it is a public recreational sports centre. Its multi-purpose artificial-turf court is intended for tennis, volleyball, foot tennis, basketball and small-sided football. Check the centre’s operating conditions before visiting. HROMFEST is a recurring public music festival held in V Kolnách in Hromnice. The range of things to explore therefore extends from landscapes and architectural history to recreational sports and music, without requiring every trip to have the same focus.
