Manetin is distinguished by a striking combination of Baroque architecture and sculpture, set within a landscape of basins, ridges and forests. The town’s listed conservation area was designated in 1992 and includes 25 monuments. The surrounding area also offers useful points of reference: Chlumská hora, Doubravický vrch, also known as Kozelka, and Zbraslavský vrch rise above the Manětín Basin. The Lomské vrchoviny forest complex lies south of Manetin.

Baroque landmarks in town

An ensemble of more than 30 Baroque statues and sculptural groups has been preserved in Manetin. The sculptural group of the Holy Trinity gives the main square its distinctive character. It dates from 1719; a sandstone copy, created by academic sculptor Jiří Novák between 1998 and 2000, now stands there. Historically, Vysoká cesta connected Manetin with the settlement near the Church of St. Barbara. Between 1728 and 1734, it was lined with 14 larger-than-life statues of saints from the workshop of sculptor Josef Herscher. Together, the sculptures show how religious artworks and roads are part of the town’s history.

The Church of St. John the Baptist also reveals different periods of construction. Its existence is documented from 1182; its present form was created during a reconstruction between 1711 and 1717. Remains of the walls of the chancel and the tower survive from the original Gothic church, while the interior furnishings are predominantly Baroque. The building thus brings together traces of Gothic architecture and a later Baroque design.

The castle grounds include a French garden and an English park. The English landscape park was laid out south of the Manětínský potok at the beginning of the 19th century. Its features include a pond with its own water supply, a hermitage and a pavilion on an artificial hill. The different garden styles create two distinct features within the grounds: French design and landscape-park elements featuring water, a structure and an elevated setting.

The orangery also combines surviving structural elements with plans for restoration. Parts of the original wooden structure and glazed wall have been preserved, along with a brick-built aviary and remnants of 18th-century Baroque wall paintings. Following investigations, it was decided to restore the orangery to a form that approximates its Baroque appearance. The restoration is therefore a decision, not a completed project.

Cycling routes and shorter paths

Two cycling routes can be compared by length and course. The 37-kilometre “Baroko II” cycling route passes through Manetin. The 58-kilometre “Hřebenem Chlumské hory na Třebouňský vrch” route starts and ends here. Comparing their lengths gives you a concrete indication of the scale of each route, without making assumptions about travel time or difficulty. Route details may change; check the current route before setting off.

For a shorter option, the Mlýnská stezka connects Manetin and Nečtiny and is just under three kilometres long. Its route includes nine information-board stops and hand-carved wooden sculptures. Compared with the two longer cycling routes, its length is easy to put into perspective; here, the focus is also on the stops and sculptures along the way. This lets you combine Manetin’s cultural and landscape themes with routes of different lengths, without treating the routes as equivalent.
