Suchá Lhota combines a cohesive village settlement pattern with predominantly agricultural surroundings. Old farmsteads with gabled roofs shape the village; smaller patches of woodland lie mainly in valleys and along the edges of the cadastral area. This gives you two themes to consider when planning your trip: the history of buildings and remembrance in the village, and routes to explore on foot or by bike. The chapel, memorial and water tower each offer a different historical perspective.
Village Centre and Remembrance
In the village centre, the Chapel of St. Anne stands beside a small ornamental garden, a memorial to those who fell in the First World War and a crucifix. The chapel was probably built in 1888. At a festive time, it is ceremonially decorated and opened to anyone who wishes to reflect there in peace.
The memorial beside the chapel was made in 1920 from Hořice stone by the sculptor p. Vocha from Česká Třebová. It records the names and photographs of fallen and missing soldiers. In addition to commemorating the year it was created, it thus preserves the memory of specific individuals in the local community. The water tower, built in 1929, is another defining landmark of Suchá Lhota. The chapel, memorial and water tower represent different historical reference points for the village.
Culture and Village Life
A more recent part of cultural life is the village theatre group from Suchá Lhota, revived in 2019, which gave several repeat performances in picturesque communities across the region. The Víťa Fest also brings together culture and remembrance: it is a public memorial festival, whose second edition took place in 2026 in the cultural grounds of Suchá Lhota. Bands performed there throughout the day.
The traditional Posvícení feast includes a shared meal of duck, dumplings and cabbage. At an event in 2025, local Sucholhotecké topinky were also offered for tasting. These dishes are therefore associated with specific celebrations and events in the village. The municipal library adds another dimension to village life: its rooms are equipped for reading, studying and relaxing, and its collection includes fiction, children's and young adult literature, and specialist literature.
Hiking, Cycling and Getting There
Published in 2018, the approximately 9 km hiking route “Suchá Lhota – Cerekvice” starts in Suchá Lhota and passes through Mošnovy and Bučina to Cerekvice. Check local conditions before setting out. The route links a clearly named starting point with two intermediate places and a destination; its stated length can help you decide how to fit this hike into your travel plans.
For a cycling trip, it is worth distinguishing between two routes in different areas. The municipality organises bike rides as part of its recurring activity programme, including rides around the village. The “Mlýn Horky – Růžový palouček – Nové Hrady” cycling circuit passes through Suchá Lhota, among other places; check the conditions and signage before setting off. A separate cycling route in the wider region connects attractive places with Litomyšl, Vysoké Mýto and Nové Hrady. One possible connection heads towards the Maštale Nature Reserve. Check the route alignment before using this longer-distance connection as the basis for your trip.
Suchá Lhota is connected to Litomyšl by bus. For your specific travel date, it is best to check the current timetable. The fire-water reservoir and its surroundings are used as a bathing spot; as seasonal operation may vary, check the current situation before visiting.
