Telecí lies in a long valley along the Telecký potok stream and is part of the Žďárské vrchy Protected Landscape Area. You can explore the village through several themes: enclosed timber farmsteads and barns, two churches with different historical associations, the Lukasova Linden and a marked hiking trail. This will help you decide before your trip whether you are mainly interested in rural architecture, local history or a hiking route.
Enclosed Farmsteads and Timber Architecture
The southern part of Telecí has been a village conservation area since 2005. Numerous timber houses and farm buildings have been preserved there, forming enclosed three- or four-sided “poličské” farmsteads. A farmstead is more than a single building: its characteristic form comes from the arrangement of buildings along several sides of a shared courtyard. If you are interested in traditional rural architecture, Telecí offers both individual notable buildings and a broader historical context.
Farmstead No. 16 is a particularly well-preserved example. It is considered an exceptional example of the “poličský” type and is built almost entirely of timber. Comparing it with the conservation area highlights two different scales: here, the focus is on a single farmstead; there, on the larger group of timber houses and farm buildings. In addition, two rare polygonal timber barns have been preserved at house numbers 10 and 89. These barns add another type of structure to the picture, but should not be confused with the enclosed farmsteads.
Churches and Local History
A free-standing bell tower stands beside the Catholic Gothic Church of St Mary Magdalene; it is believed to date back to the 16th century. Telecí’s Evangelical Tolerance Church offers a different historical reference point: it was built in 1783. The two churches can therefore be distinguished by their denominations and different construction dates, without reducing their histories to the same period.
Another chapter of local history recalls the Second World War. A monument stands by the vicarage near the Evangelical Tolerance Church, commemorating the fact that a well-known resistance organisation met there during the war. The church, vicarage and monument are thus connected to a specific local setting; the monument marks the memory of those meetings.
The Lukasova Linden and Its Stories
The Lukasova Linden is also known as Zpívající lípa. Its age is estimated at around 600 to 700 years. In 2021, it was named Tree of the Year. The age is therefore an estimate, while the award refers to a specific year—two different points of reference when learning about the tree.
Legends and stories associated with the linden are also the subject of an exhibition in the historic cellar of neighbouring house No. 102. If you would like to include the exhibition in your plans, check in advance whether it is currently open to visitors. This adds the traditional stories to your understanding of the linden without conflating them with its estimated age or award.
Hiking Route and Different Areas of Interest
As a hiking option, the yellow-marked Stezka Terézy Novákové trail runs from Telecí via Lucký vrch to Borová u Poličky. The village architecture and churches offer a different focus from this route: one option is about preserved buildings and their history, while the other follows a marked trail with named points along the way.
To decide which aspects of Telecí interest you, it helps to consider these differences: a single exceptionally well-preserved farmstead, several farmsteads and barns, the historic churches, and the linden with its stories. If you enjoy exploring different aspects of a place, you can combine these themes; if you prefer a clear focus, you could choose based on architectural history, remembrance, nature or hiking.
