A hilly valley, houses of folk architecture and a cycling route of a specified length give Nedvezi a distinctive character. Also part of its appeal are the story of a house that inspired a novel, a church dating from around 1900, and a pond that was probably created in the 16th century. Whether you are interested in the landscape, local history or a longer bike ride, you will find different points of interest here to shape your stay.

Hills, Distant Views and a Pond

Nedvezi lies in a hilly valley on the northeastern edge of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. Four named elevations shape the landscape around the village: Librův kopec is 722 metres above sea level, Navrátilův kopec 737 metres, Jírův kopec 729 metres and Kuklův kopec 698 metres. The elevations listed are therefore close in height; Navrátilův kopec is the highest and Kuklův kopec the lowest of the four. The difference between them is 39 metres.

From Librův kopec, views stretch in every direction, including as far as the border mountains, Sněžka and the transmitter on Praděd. Visibility of these distant landmarks depends on the weather. For travellers interested in sweeping views, the hill offers a tangible connection to the landscape: the panorama links the surrounding hills with prominent landmarks farther afield.

Nedvězský rybník is also part of the landscape around Nedvezi. It was probably created towards the end of the 16th century. This cautious dating makes it a historical point of reference without assigning its origins to a precise year. Together with the valley and surrounding hills, the pond adds a body of water with a long, though not precisely dated, history to the landscape.

Village Character and History

A walk through Nedvezi passes dozens of folk-architecture houses and corners where time seems to stand still. If you are interested in a place’s architecture and character, you can focus on the village as a whole rather than centring your visit on a single building. The walk takes in numerous houses and different corners of the village, offering its own way to connect with local history.

One building also stands out for its literary significance: Librův grunt is building No. 1 on Librův kopec, on the road to Bystré. It inspired Tereza Nováková to write her novel “Na Librově gruntě”. The book describes the lives of local people in the previous century and their traditional customs. Exploring the building thus also leads to a literary depiction of everyday life in the area in earlier times. The foundations of Librův grunt probably date back to the 16th century.

Nedvezi is also home to the branch church of Saint Procopius, the Abbot. It was built from June 1900 to September 1901. This clearly defined construction period offers a different historical point of reference from the foundations of Librův grunt, which probably date back to the 16th century. Anyone interested in local history can thus consider two different periods without conflating them.

Cycling to Nedvezi

The Polička–Svojanov and back cycling route is 47.5 kilometres long and suitable for mountain bikes and cross bikes. It reaches Nedvezi from the crossroads below Jaroška Hill via a farm track. This specifies both the route’s total length and the final section described: the 47.5 kilometres refers to the Polička–Svojanov and back cycling route, while the farm track describes the approach to Nedvezi from the crossroads. Check the surface and signage before setting off.

The bike ride and the walk through the village offer different highlights: the route’s length makes it a longer cycling trip, while the walk focuses on folk-architecture houses and the village itself. If you would like to explore the literary history further, you can also follow the connection between Librův grunt and Tereza Nováková’s novel.
