Church history, a six-arch railway viaduct and protected animal species in the wetlands: Hradec nad Svitavou offers several points to consider when planning a trip. You can get to know the town through its buildings and history, or focus on nature and hiking trails. Which holiday apartment is right for your stay depends on what interests you most in the area.
Church and local history
The Church of St. Catherine is originally Gothic. After fires in 1673 and 1710, it was rebuilt; its tower has retained its medieval character. The church was originally fortified and protected both the village and a trade route. Near the church, this route crossed the Svitava River. The building’s history thus connects sacred architecture with the town’s former importance and a trade route.
The Holy Trinity Column stands in the southern part of Hradec nad Svitavou. Dating from 1725, it is an exceptional work featuring reliefs from the same year. Another historic landmark is the surviving chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary, which was restored in 1870. Together, these buildings represent different forms of religious heritage: an originally fortified church, a column with reliefs and a chapel with a history of its own.
The local history of a notable person born here is also part of the story: Father Engelmar Unzeitig was beatified in WĂĽrzburg on 24 September 2016.
Viaduct and railway history
The railway viaduct in Hradec nad Svitavou has six arches and was built between 1847 and 1849. Its construction dates to a different era from the church’s rebuilds following the fires of the 17th and early 18th centuries. For those interested in architectural history, the town offers two distinct historic points of interest: sacred architecture and an engineering structure from the mid-19th century.
Railway line 260 between Česká Třebová and Brno also runs through Hradec nad Svitavou; several trains stop in the town every day. If you are planning to travel by train, check the current timetable: train frequency and connections may change.
Wetlands and trails
The HradeckĂ© rybnĂÄŤky wetlands are considered the most valuable natural area in the municipality of Hradec nad Svitavou. Forty protected animal species have been recorded there, including nine amphibian species; populations may change. For travelers interested in nature watching, this offers a different focus from the town’s buildings and railway history.
A yellow hiking trail runs through the cadastral area of Hradec nad Svitavou towards Horecký hřbet. Trail markings and conditions may change. A facility for residents and tourists was also built in the southern part of the town in 2022. It includes covered benches and tables, as well as a short educational trail. If you plan to visit, check its current condition and access locally.
When choosing your destination, you can weigh up the different themes: the church, Holy Trinity Column, chapel and viaduct represent different chapters in the town’s history, while the wetlands and hiking trail draw attention to nature and outdoor activities. Narrow your search for a holiday apartment according to what you want your stay to focus on. If rail travel is part of your plans, check the timetable separately.
