At the edge of Kukle, a boundary stone bearing the year 2008 recalls the border between Moravia and Bohemia. An information board with photographs and a map of the village complements the site. Together with hiking trails, other boundary stones and distinctive landscape features, Kukle offers various starting points for a stay focused on culture and nature.
Border History and Places of Remembrance
The 2008 boundary stone stands beside a bus stop at the edge of the village. In the village centre, Turistické rozcestí Kukle is also next to a bus stop, on the main road from Svitavy to Litomyšl. The Mariotereziánské kameny mark the historic border between Bohemia and Moravia; a royal crown and a bishop’s mitre serve as their decorations. Trstěnická stezka is also part of the area’s history: it probably ran through what is now Kukle.
Near Kukle, a board on the Českomoravské pomezí nature trail provides information about the military conflict between Austrian and Prussian troops in 1866. Another striking feature in the village landscape is an iron cross with a figure of Christ. It stands on a stone plinth on the left-hand side of the Svitavy–Litomyšl road in Kukle.
Památník včelích matek in the Brand woodland, within the cadastral area of the municipality of Kukle, commemorates a regional beekeeping tradition that has almost been forgotten. Following its restoration, the monument was opened in 2014 and presented as a regionally significant work of architectural and tourist interest. If you plan to visit, check access and conditions on site.
Green-Marked Trails Around Kukle
A green-marked hiking trail runs through Kukle from the stop in Vendolí to U pramenů Svitavy. A detailed route description, last updated in 2011, leads from Turistické rozcestí Kukle past boundary stones over the hill Na stráni and via U Svaté Trojice and Ostrý Kámen to Vendolí railway station. In the opposite direction, the same trail passes further boundary stones to the U pramene Svitavy signpost. The routes described therefore differ mainly in their stated destinations: Vendolí railway station in one direction and the U pramene Svitavy signpost in the other. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
Watershed and Moorland Meadow
The European watershed between the Black Sea and the North Sea runs through Kukle. Alongside the historic boundary markers, this landscape feature also helps define the village. The 2024 planning document for the Svitavy area lists Louka u Kukle as a registered significant landscape feature. The moorland meadow is also a habitat for creeping willow, broad-leaved marsh orchid, a sedge species, narrow-leaved cotton-grass, globe devil’s-claw and marsh valerian.
Near Kukle is Rybníček, a small woodland pond. A visitor description published in June 2026 mentions water lilies, a shelter, benches and numerous wooden animal carvings there. Check the facilities on site before including the pond in your plans.
Choose Accommodation to Suit Your Plans
When looking for a holiday apartment for a stay in Kukle, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on: should the trip mainly include border history and hiking trails, or would you also like to visit the moorland meadow and the beekeeping monument? This way, your choice reflects the stay you have planned, without assuming that individual attractions are located near one another just because they share a place name.
