Anyone interested in architectural and local history will find several clearly distinct themes in Banín. At the heart of the village is the protected Gothic Church of St. Barbara; there is also a rural farmstead and historical accounts stretching back to the Middle Ages and the wartime period. Cycle Route 4201 also passes through Banín, adding a practical point of interest for travellers by bicycle to the village’s cultural attractions.
Church of St. Barbara: Architecture and Grounds
St. Barbara’s is a Gothic building made of rubble granite and was first mentioned in 1350. The tower was built in 1559. The church’s early mention and the later construction of the tower mark different stages in the history of the complex.
The complex is surrounded by a cemetery wall. On the eastern side, the bell tower is integrated into the wall and also serves as a gateway. The enclosure and passageway are therefore part of the same architectural complex as the Gothic church.
Local History Across the Centuries
Banín’s local history extends beyond the church. In 1293, King Wenceslas donated Banín and Německá Bělá, as part of the Svojanov Crown estate, to Zbraslav Monastery. This medieval donation is a distinct point of reference in the history of the village; the first mention of St. Barbara’s in 1350, by contrast, belongs to the church’s history. The two dates are 57 years apart.
The history of language and education is also part of Banín’s past. Historically, the village had a predominantly German-speaking population. After the founding of Czechoslovakia, Banín had a German school and a Czech minority school. During the Second World War, the border between the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia and the German Reich ran near Banín, in the direction of Rohozná.
At the place now known as “na Babičce”, a settlement disappeared during or shortly after the Thirty Years’ War. According to local tradition, a sow dug up a bell there, said to have come from the tower of the church in the lost settlement.
Farmstead and Cycle Route
A rural farmstead in Banín is an enclosed courtyard with a small inner yard and residential and farm buildings. It is accessed through a gate and a pedestrian entrance. The farmstead provides a different architectural focus from St. Barbara’s: here, the inner courtyard and the functions of the buildings take centre stage, while at the church, the defining feature is the combination of the church, cemetery wall and tower.
Cycle Route 4201 runs through Hradec nad Svitavou, Banín, Bělá nad Svitavou and Bohuňov. Banín is therefore part of a specifically named cycling route connecting four places. For travellers planning to explore by bicycle, the route offers a second perspective alongside the village’s architectural and historical attractions.
