Opatov can be explored through two distinct themes: historic religious buildings and a landscape shaped by ponds and forests. Several medieval building phases can be distinguished at the Church of St Anthony; the Opatovské rybníky, in turn, form a biocorridor for bird species. The area also offers walks, cycling and mushroom foraging. When planning your stay, you can choose between architectural history, birdlife and time outdoors.

Religious buildings from several centuries

The Church of St Anthony dates from the first half of the 13th century. Its tower has a Romanesque base and was built around 1240. The chancel is Gothic and dates from the first half of the 14th century. These architectural elements reveal a succession of different building phases: the Romanesque base and the Gothic chancel belong to different architectural periods. The Chapel of St John Nepomuk provides a much later historical reference. It was built in 1722 by the priest Matěj Peška. Opatov’s religious history thus spans medieval architectural forms and the 18th century.

Ponds and bird migration

The Opatovské rybníky form an important biocorridor for the migration and spread of bird species and other species between Moravia and Bohemia. Around 220 bird species have so far been recorded in the system. This figure describes the recorded diversity of birds; the biocorridor refers to the importance of the pond system for the movement of species between the two regions. Hvězda is the largest and oldest pond in the Opatov area. The natural environment can therefore be explored both as part of a pond system and through a single prominent pond.

Králova zahrada and local trails

Králova zahrada lies in the headwaters of the Zádolský Stream, within the cadastral area of Opatov. In early spring, the area is characterised by a mass flowering of spring snowflakes. This bloom gives the natural setting a clear seasonal aspect. From Semanín railway station, Králova zahrada is less than a kilometre away on foot via a surfaced forest path. A blue-marked walking trail from Semanín railway station to Svitavy also runs near the garden. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

Walking, cycling and mushroom foraging

The landscape around Opatov is suitable for walking, cycling and mushroom foraging; ponds and forests shape the surroundings. When planning your day, you can therefore choose between a cultural and historical focus and time in the landscape. Walking, cycling and mushroom foraging offer different ways to experience the area. Nature here ranges from the seasonal blooms of Králova zahrada to the birdlife of the Opatovské rybníky.

A historic transport connection

Opatov railway station is also part of the town’s history. It was connected to the Praha–Brno line and opened in 1846. This historic transport connection adds another chapter to the town’s history, alongside its medieval building phases and the chapel dating from 1722.
