Several distinct travel interests come together in Sruby: a monument in the village square, a memorial grave in the cemetery, a church with its own architectural history, and wetlands within the cadastral area. There is also a station on Line 010 and Cycle Route 4230. If you are looking for a holiday rental, you can choose based on the focus of your stay: local history, nature, or travelling by train or bicycle.

Getting here: the railway station in Sruby

Sruby railway station is served by Line 010 between Kolín and Česká Třebová. There is no ticket office at the station; tickets are sold on the train. Factor this into your travel plans. Check the current timetable and station information again before travelling, as timetables and station services may change.

Memorial sites and church architecture

The monument to the fallen of the First World War stands in the village square. This monumental structure has a rectangular ground plan and is made of dressed granite blocks. Three granite blocks engraved with names are shaped like open books. In the local cemetery there is a granite grave commemorating the victims of a death transport on 24 January 1945. It remembers seven prisoners from Auschwitz concentration camp whose names are unknown.

The Church of the Ascension of the Lord (“Kostel Nanebevstoupení Páně”) in Sruby was built in 1877–1878 in a historicist style on the site of an older Gothic church. Its history therefore connects the later church building with an older church site. The church is a filial church of the Roman Catholic parish of Choceň; services are held there once a month. If the services are important to your plans, check the current date before travelling.

Wetlands: areas and habitats

The local biocentre LBC 69 “Srubské mokřiny” covers 6.17 ha within the cadastral area of Sruby. The wetland of the same name is a habitat for the protected snail Lymnea lagostis; this habitat is unique in the East Bohemian region. Its vegetation composition is secondary and close to natural.

At 18.21 ha, the “Končinský a Podedvorní rybník” biotope centre is larger than “Rutník” at 17.66 ha and “Srubské mokřiny” at 6.17 ha. It lies south of the settlement of Hluboká and consists of two ponds with species-rich bankside vegetation and a pronounced littoral zone. It is also an important breeding ground for waterbirds. The “Rutník” biotope centre lies at Rutník Pond and includes adjacent high-quality waterlogged meadows. These different areas and habitats give you specific points of reference when choosing nature-related themes for your stay.

Sruby on Cycle Route 4230

Cycle Route 4230 runs from Vysoké Mýto to Sudslava via Šnakov, Slatina, Sruby, Choceň, Běstovice, Skořenice, Hradiště and Koldín. Sruby is therefore part of a route connecting several places and continuing beyond the village. The full sequence is useful when planning a cycling trip: it shows the route through Sruby as well as the named starting and ending places, without specifying a particular stage length or travel time.
