Vyprachtice combines a documented history dating back to 1304 with distinctive buildings and seasonal opportunities for skiing and cross-country skiing. This gives you different things to focus on when planning your trip: historic architecture and monuments, or winter activities that depend on the season and snow conditions. Which one matters most to you can help you plan when to travel.

History in a Document and the Town Centre

The earliest written mention of Vyprachtice dates from 1304. It appears in a deed of donation from King Wenceslas II to Zbraslav Monastery. This early record offers a different way to explore the town’s history than its later buildings: it anchors the town in a specific document, while the column and church tell the story of later periods.

The Holy Trinity Column dates from 1863. A war memorial stands in the town centre, below a slope at a road junction. The two sites offer different points of reference: the column can be dated, while the memorial’s location in the centre is described in particularly specific terms.

Church, Cross and Medieval Fortress

The rural Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord (Kostel Proměnění Páně) is a prominent landmark in Vyprachtice and the surrounding countryside. The Empire-style church was built between 1815 and 1817 on the site of an older building. A tower dating from the 15th to 16th century survived from the earlier structure. The church thus brings together a building from the early 19th century and a much older component.

The Neo-Gothic cast-iron cross in Vyprachtice also combines different forms of craftsmanship: industrial cast-iron production and stone carving. Its stone pedestal features reliefs of Saint Anthony of Padua and the Instruments of the Passion of Christ. The combination of materials and imagery gives the cross a distinctive place in the local history of architecture and monuments.

Another trace of the past leads to Na zámku, at the entrance to the Sázava Valley at the end of Vyprachtice. A fortress stood there in the Middle Ages, as archaeological investigations have established. The castle site represents an earlier chapter in the town’s history, while the church reveals different building phases and surviving architectural features.

Hilly Countryside, River Valley and Winter Trails

Vyprachtice lies at elevations of between 510 and 875 metres. The landscape is hilly, with some steep climbs, and several hiking trails cross the area. Differences in elevation and steepness are therefore useful factors to consider when choosing a hike.

The Naučná stezka Údolí Moravské Sázavy nature trail runs through a forested section of the Moravská Sázava valley between Albrechtice and Vyprachtice. The Moravská Sázava rises at the foot of Buková hora and continues from Vyprachtice towards Moravia. The trail and the river offer different perspectives on the valley: one takes you through a wooded section, while the other follows the course of the waterway.

There are two different options for winter sports. The small Ski areál Ovaz Merta ski area is in the upper part of Vyprachtice, below the mountain Na Hoblovně; it operates seasonally. The Buková hora – Suchý vrch cross-country skiing area has an access point at the saddle between Vyprachtice and Čenkovice. Access and grooming depend on snow conditions. Check conditions in advance if you plan to base your winter days around these activities.
