The first “official” mentions of Džbánov date back to 1292; the village itself was founded around the middle of the 13th century. This difference in timing gives your visit a specific historical reference point without conflating the village’s founding with its first official mention. Džbánov also offers other points of interest to help you plan: green spaces, cycling, and bus and train connections. You can tailor your stay to your interests, whether you are more interested in local history, a bike ride or finding your way around the area.

Local history, from the name to the coat of arms

The village’s name evolved from Čban to Čbánov and then to today’s Džbánov. In the 14th century, Džbánov and its surrounding area belonged to Zbraslav Monastery. The old Bohemian noble family Džbánovští ze Džbánova also originated in Džbánov. The family bore a red shield with two crossed swords, their hilts pointing upwards; the crest consisted of three silver ostrich feathers. The development of the name, the monastery connection and the heraldry thus offer three distinct ways to explore local history.

Green spaces and cycling

For a sense of the area, it is helpful to look at the village centre and its outskirts. Public green spaces are located mainly in central Džbánov, around a body of water. Numerous mature specimen trees are part of the streetscape. On the edge of the settlement, gardens and designated green spaces mark the transition between the built-up area and open countryside. Cycling offers two further, distinct points of interest. Džbánov’s dense network of paved service roads is used for cycle tourism. The signposted Vysoké Mýto–Nové Hrady cycling route also passes through Javorník and Džbánov before continuing to Knířov and Vysoké Mýto. It is approximately ten kilometres long and moderately difficult; descents and climbs alternate over much of the route. For planning your ride, the distance and difficulty provide a useful starting point, while the alternating descents and climbs characterise the route.

Getting here by bus and train

Bus route 700908, operated by ČSAD Ústí nad Orlicí, a.s., connects Vysoké Mýto, Džbánov, Bučina, Příluka and Nové Hrady. The Džbánov u Vysokého Mýta railway station is on ČD line No. 016 between Choceň and Litomyšl, and is approximately 1.4 kilometres from the village centre. These are two different points of reference when comparing travel options: the bus route lists the places it connects, while the railway information gives the line’s endpoints and the station’s approximate distance from the village centre. Check the current bus timetable before travelling; it is also a good idea to check train timetables and stop information, as services and stops may change.
