Řetová is defined by a landmark building and a varied valley: the Church of St. Mary Magdalene dates from 1755, while the cadastral area includes forests, meadows, designated landscape features and the regulated Husí krk stream. It also has marked cycling routes, the “Okolo Řetové” nature trail and a cross-country ski trail, which is groomed when there is sufficient snow. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between features described as permanent and an activity that is explicitly dependent on the season.
Valley, Forest and Stream
The cadastral area of Řetová lies in a valley flanked by forests on both sides. Its elevation ranges from 390 to 569.5 metres. The regulated Husí krk stream shapes the valley and flows into the Tichá Orlice. The range in elevation, wooded slopes and stream each offer a different sense of the landscape.
The location of Orlice Nature Park is also precisely defined: it extends into the cadastral area along its northern edge, north of road II/360. This limited overlap is different from describing the entire area as part of the nature park.
Church and Cultural Monuments
The Church of St. Mary Magdalene, dating from 1755, is a landmark of Řetová. An ossuary next to the church is among the municipality’s protected immovable cultural monuments. A protected enclosure wall surrounds the church building. The church, ossuary and wall give the local cultural heritage a clear architectural focus, without implying anything about whether they can currently be visited.
Another protected cultural monument is the mangle and bleach house at No. 137 in Řetová. The name itself refers to stages in caring for laundry. The statue of St. John of Nepomuk is also among Řetová’s cultural monuments. Those interested in architectural and local history will therefore find several different types of monument: a church building, its associated structures, a property known as a mangle and bleach house, and a statue of a saint.
Landscape Features and Natural Attributes
The land-use plan, in effect since 20 May 2022, lists several registered significant landscape features, each with its own characteristics. “Jalovce” lies east of Řetová. An isolated population of the endangered common juniper grows there on a former pasture. “Opukové osypy” refers to a feature on meadows along the cadastral boundary between Řetová and Přívrat, with marl outcrops and rare thermophilic plants.
“Opučák” is an abandoned marl quarry at the edge of the forest on the southern slope of Andrlův Chlum; rare thermophilic and calcicolous plants grow there. At the forest edge southwest of Řetová, “Bromion” is home to thermophilic grassland communities and a diverse insect fauna. In addition, four designated natural monuments in the form of protected commemorative trees are located in the cadastral area. The features therefore range from juniper on former pasture and marl outcrops to grassland and insect fauna.
Routes and Seasonal Activities
The “Okolo Řetové” nature trail is one of the designated tourist routes. Several marked cycling routes pass through the cadastral area. There is also an option for winter activities, subject to specific conditions: when there is sufficient snow, a groomed cross-country ski trail runs along the eastern ridge between Andrlův Chlum and the Kozlovská rozhledna observation tower. The ski trail option therefore explicitly depends on snow conditions; the cycling routes and nature trail are other designated route options.
Local leisure facilities also include a multi-purpose sports field with an ice surface and facilities for tennis and volleyball. This combination adds several sports to the range of routes available at a named sports field. Which activity you focus on therefore also depends on whether you are interested in marked trails, the snow-dependent cross-country ski route or the sports facilities.
Practical Planning
For timetable information, the regional IREDO transport system lists the Řetová, Na Mandlu bus stop. The entry is from the stop list dated 11 May 2026; bus services can change independently of a stop being listed. So check the timetable for your travel date. This keeps your plans aligned with the actual travel options, while your choice of focus for your stay can range from cultural monuments and landscape features to seasonal activities.
