The present-day Church of Saints Peter and Paul was built between 1804 and 1809 using materials from the burned-out Baroque Nový zámek castle on Zámecký vrch above Rudoltice. This connection between church and castle provides a concrete thread through the history of the place.

Castle history, church, and sculpture

Nový zámek u Lanškrouna lies between Rudoltice and Lanškroun and is better known locally as Zámeček. What remains of the extensive Baroque castle of the House of Liechtenstein includes a single tower and extensive underground cellars. A guided tour gives access to around 1,000 m² of underground rooms. If a cellar tour is important to your travel plans, confirm access before your trip.

Another work of local history is the Neoclassical Holy Trinity sculpture group in Rudoltice. The Holy Trinity sculpture, of the iconographic type known as the Throne of Grace, dates from 1802 and was probably made in the Mielnický workshop in Žamberk. It is considered a high-quality work of stone sculpture. Its date is shortly before the construction of the present-day church: here you can encounter two distinct testimonies from a similar period, a sculpture and a church built using reused castle materials.

Pilgrimage and connections to nature

The annual pilgrimage to Saints Peter and Paul is celebrated on 29 June or the nearest Sunday. The date rule gives you a specific point of reference if you would like to plan your trip around this recurring event. Check the exact date for the year in question.

The landscape is also connected to Rudoltice in several ways. The Lanškrounské rybníky Nature Park extends into the northern tip of the cadastral area. An ornithological observation station is located nearby, at Dlouhý rybník. The Lanškrounské rybníky region is an important breeding area for waterbirds and an important stopover for migratory birds. Alongside the architectural and artistic works, this offers a distinct connection to nature and the region’s birdlife.

Routes by length and theme

Completed in 2023, the Fit stezka is an approximately 3-kilometer running and educational trail through municipal forests. There are four stations along the route with strength-training and workout features. Two alternatives expand the options: a route of approximately 4.5 kilometers and an 8.5-kilometer option that also loops around the Lanškrounské rybníky in a large figure eight. These details offer a specific comparison by length and route; check local conditions before setting out.

If you are looking for a cycling route rather than a running and educational trail, you can consider the Lanškroun–Rudoltice cycle route listed by KČT. The options described therefore include routes of different lengths as well as a cycle route between the two named places.

Getting there and accommodation

Rudoltice v Čechách railway station offers step-free access to the station building and at least one platform. Check the operator’s current information about these facilities before your trip.

If you are looking for a holiday apartment, your travel interests can help determine your choice of destination: the pilgrimage has a set annual date, while the Fit stezka offers several route lengths. This can help you decide whether cultural history or physical activity is more important for your stay in Rudoltice.
