Cycling route 4234 runs from Mladotice via Kněžice to Spytice. A short connecting route, it is 5.5 kilometres long. Kněžice therefore offers a clearly defined cycling option that runs directly through the village.
Cycling between a route and a circuit
Route 4188 between Podhořany u Ronova and Ronov nad Doubravou runs through the Kněžice planning area. A cycling circuit through the area heads towards Běstvina, Třemošnice, Závratec, Mladotice, Ronov nad Doubravou and Chvalovice, offering views of the Železné hory, Čáslavsko and the Českomoravská vrchovina. This gives you a choice of different types of ride: an easy 5.5-kilometre connecting route, a route between two places, and a circuit with scenic views. Before setting off, check current signage and surface conditions, as routes and conditions may change.
Landscape in the foothills of the Železné hory
Kněžice lies in a hilly landscape enclave in the foothills of the Železné hory, between the left bank of the Doubrava and the course of the Doubravka stream. These offer two different points of reference when choosing a landscape: the village’s hilly setting in the foothills and the views along the circuit.
Church and historical traces
The Church of St Martin lies about 2 kilometres from Kněžice and was originally the parish church of the vanished village of Stusyně. The first written mention of the village and its parish church dates from 1352. The church stands on a rock above the Doubrava. The route from Kněžice to the Church of St Martin is accessible by vehicle year-round and can be walked. Before your visit, check local path conditions and access to the interior.
At house number 23 in Kněžice are archaeological traces of a fortress, which is listed as a cultural monument. The village’s brick chapel was built in 1930 to replace an earlier wooden bell tower. Here you can encounter different traces of construction: archaeological remains of a fortress and a chapel whose brick building replaced a wooden predecessor.
The historic Libická (Liběcká) Trail is also associated with Kněžice. From the 8th to the 12th century, it served as a connection between Bohemia and Moravia. The former route was damaged and ploughed over; the historic route should therefore not be confused with a modern hiking trail.
Getting there and finding your way
Kněžice lies outside the main road and rail connections in the East Bohemia region. Three bus lines operate in the area. The Kněžice and Kněžice, bytovky stops are on road III/33733. As bus services and timetables may change, check current routes and departure times before travelling. This will help you plan the specific connection for your travel date.
