Located at the northern foot of the Železné hory, Heřmanův Městec combines cultural history with named nature and trail themes. St. Bartholomew’s Church, the synagogue and Gallery Cyrany offer distinct cultural highlights; Bažantnice and the “Město u dvou moří” nature trail offer a different perspective on landscape and geological history. When looking for a hotel, consider whether architecture and art or nature and trails will play a greater role in your stay.
Landscape and geological perspectives
Bažantnice lies on the eastern edge of the built-up area of Heřmanův Městec and covers approximately 22.2 hectares. It is part of the Natura 2000 network and serves as a recreational area for the town’s residents. Its protected-area status and recreational use describe two sides of the same natural space: its place in the network and its role in residents’ everyday lives. This gives Bažantnice a different focus from the town’s architectural and collection history.
The “Město u dvou moří” nature trail has six stops. It presents information about two prehistoric seas that once washed over the area of what is now Heřmanův Městec. Its subject reaches far back beyond the periods in which the surviving buildings were created: the focus is the geological past of the present-day area. The six stops structure this look at geological history; Bažantnice, by contrast, is defined by its location, area, protected-area status and recreational use.
Churches, heritage protection and art
St. Bartholomew’s Church is a cultural monument of regional significance. It was built in the pure Baroque style between 1756 and 1761. The town’s heritage conservation zone was designated in 1990 and also includes the park belonging to the chateau. The park is attached to the town’s most significant listed building. The history of an individual church building and the protected area encompassing a broader part of the town thus offer different perspectives on cultural heritage.
Another historic complex is located by the Church of the Annunciation: the old cemetery complex includes a church from the second half of the 16th century, listed gravestones, a Baroque bell tower and an enclosing wall. Its features bring together different architectural elements and periods at a single named site. The chronology is particularly useful when comparing it with St. Bartholomew’s: here, the complex includes a church from the second half of the 16th century, while there, the focus is a pure Baroque building from the 18th century.
The synagogue’s history can also be dated precisely: it was fully reconstructed between 1997 and 2001 and ceremonially reopened on 25 November 2001. Gallery Cyrany is a different cultural focus. Since 2002, it has served as a permanent gallery and houses a collection of artworks by East Bohemian painters and sculptors of the 20th century. Religious architecture, reconstruction history and fine art thus add to the different perspectives on the town.
Trails, guided tours and travel
Konopáč is a junction for marked hiking and cycling routes. Both hiking and cycling are therefore represented there by marked routes. For travel planning, this is a different kind of starting point from the nature trail’s six stops: while the trail presents a geological theme, Konopáč’s main feature is its role as a junction in the route network.
Guided tours of the training stables in Heřmanův Městec are available to visitors. Tours outside regular public opening hours must be booked at least one week in advance. If you plan to take such a tour, allow for this lead time and check the latest visitor information before your visit.

Check the times for your travel date, especially if your trip falls outside this validity period. This keeps your travel plans tied to your specific travel date, while the cultural and landscape themes described here offer different ways to shape your stay.
