Mrákotín combines village history with a geological site in the eastern part of the Železné hory National Geopark. The municipality lies in a gentle valley between Hlinsko and Skuteč. The Mrákotínský potok flows through Mrákotín and rises in the Ranský Forests. Geology, landscape, and local heritage offer different points of focus when planning your stay.
Geological Site in the Železné hory Geopark
The site comprises several outcrops in wooded areas and fields southwest of the municipality, in the stretch between the village and a telecommunications transmitter. Small rock outcrops and abundant rock debris characterize the rocks of the so-called Mrákotín Formation of the Hlinecko Zone. The graptolite fauna is also informative: it allows precise dating to the Silurian, specifically the Llandovery. Alongside the visible rock formations, the age of the rocks is therefore a key focus.
The geological site can be reached by car without restriction; there is no vehicle ban, and access is within 250 metres. Land conditions may change, so check the current situation before your visit.
The Valley and Finding Your Way Around the Village
The Mrákotínský potok flows through the municipality, while its source lies in the Ranský Forests. With its course through the municipality and its source in the Ranský Forests, the Mrákotínský potok is part of the landscape around Mrákotín. The Železné hory – GVO project installed two information boards in the village square in the centre. This makes it possible to view the village centre and the geological outcrops to the southwest as distinct points of reference.
History and the Chapel of Saint Isidore
The first surviving written mention of Mrákotín dates from 1456. Another dated reference is the “Obnovená kniha rychty Mrákotínské,” also known as the “gruntovnice,” kept in the State Archives in Zámrsk: the book bears the year 1695. The two dates therefore refer to different historical points—the first surviving mention and the date of an archival book.
The Chapel of Saint Isidore is dedicated to Saint Isidore of Madrid, patron saint of farmers and a good harvest. Its solemn consecration took place on 20 September 2014. The Mrákotín bell tower was renovated in 2006. The route to the chapel leads from Mrákotín towards Oldřetice and then along a field track. Conditions on the track may change; check them before setting out.

The Country den was held for the fifth time at the sports ground in Mrákotín. The programme included music, dancing, and competitions for children and adults; it varies from one edition to another. If you plan to visit for the Country den, check the dates of future editions.
